Tonebase Bach Stage

This thread is dedicated to J.S. Bach keyboard music. We would like to renew the inspiring spirit of the old thread "Group-Journey through J.S. Bach" based on the inventions and extend to the entire Bach repertoire: inventions, preludes, fugues, toccatas, dances of the Suites and Partitas...

This is for everyone who wants to join!

We can enjoy Bach music together and motivate each other in the process of learning and practicing it!

"I begin every day with Bach - usually for about an hour. I used to torture myself with Czerny, which of course wasn't exactly stimulating for the mind. On the other hand, it teaches you the fingering for a B flat major scale, chromatic thirds, and so on. The daily grind of learning. Later, I discovered that I could get my 'training' under way better with Bach - a refreshment for the body, soul and spirit". (András Schiff, Music Comes Out of Silence, p. 21)

Dagmar Perfect, dance-able tempo with a charming lilt AND thoughtful dynamics.  NOT at all from the beginner side!

Pierre Tran says that this variation is a courteous dialogue between two friends. It's a very good description; don't you think?

    • Juan Carlos Olite I completely agree, what comes to mind is an elegant conversation between 2 very dear friends over some afternoon tea! Your playing warms my heart inside out 😊

In Polonaise rhythm, and after the meditative Aria, the Variation one of the Goldbergs is a "festive gateway leading to the inner world of the piece" (Thirty Bach Podcast). With this video it has a place in our Tonebase Bach Stage.

    • Juan Carlos Olite Bravo, Juan Carlos! I find this one particularly tricky: like a Sphinx one has to pass. Very well mastered!

"Bach was obsessed with mirrors, musical mirrors" (Jeremy Denk). That is the essence of Variation 15 of the Goldbergs (Canone alla Quinta, Andante), first variation in minor key, end of the first part of the work... Simply: a melancholic, meditative, gorgeous... piece.
