Lost Waltz

I am so glad to see this new forum. Thank you, Dominic. I was fortunate to attend Tonebase's first piano camp at Adamant, Vermont and meet their excellent teachers and players. The ability to connect composers with players interested in new works in real time is a huge gift.

My process is this: I improvise with Sibelius running. Then I review for ideas to elaborate upon and shape into some form of a finished piece. I will keep posting things one at a time with the scores and a link to a MIDI-generated performance.

My hope is that people will play the pieces and offer feedback. I consider these basically drafts, and your input could help me determine which, if any, pieces to further edit, develop or orchestrate for other instruments.

The compositions range from simple harmonic and melodic studies to theory-based 12-tone works. Some are fairly easy and others may be only playable in MIDI-format or by people with three hands. There are awkward notation decisions that Sibelius has made that I need to fix. I would love input at that level as well.

I greatly appreciate if anyone is willing to spend time on any of these. Feedback in comments, audio, or video clips would be an incredible help.

Lost Waltz: This one started as a simple melody that got stuck in my head while biking. I recorded myself badly singing it into the phone and went from there. It is an exploration of a simple melody that gets increasingly ornate, modulates, and returns. Very tonal and scale-based. Essentially this is a study piece and less complicated than most of my works.

Attached is the score and a Sibelius generated midi performance. This is one of 22 pieces dating back to 2013. I aspire to post one each week.

Again, thank you to Tonebase for creating this community space.

I especially like the gentleness. Lovely melody :) In some sections it reminds me of a Mazurka, with the dotted bass notes. Whatever it is, it is a lovely 3/4 dance :)

Hi Jack--this is a magnificent piece. I stumbled on this by accident--and glad I did.  I'll give it a try on my piano sometime.  thank you again.
