Schubert's Unfinished Symphony
Hey just curious what everyone's opinion is in why Schubert left the piece unfinished and kept in in the drawer like a treasure to himself.
I personally believe that Schubert did it on purpose and maybe he had come to realize something as he was attempting to write the Scherzo as he went through a critical stage of his life. Schubert knows his audiences well as reflected from all his different forms of music: art songs, piano works, symphony etc. Maybe he feels like this symphony is not intended for the audiences that goes to the symphony ochestra back in the days?

Well, what I found in Music History books while researching his work is that it’s almost certain that he himself put it away as he started working on his big C major Symphony (which is considered to be real contribution to development of this genre during Romantic period). What we unfortunately will never know is whether or not he would have finished h minor Symphony if he lived a bit longer.
If he only knew how popular Unfinished Symphony would be, maybe he would have acted differently…
