Tonebase Bach Stage

This thread is dedicated to J.S. Bach keyboard music. We would like to renew the inspiring spirit of the old thread "Group-Journey through J.S. Bach" based on the inventions and extend to the entire Bach repertoire: inventions, preludes, fugues, toccatas, dances of the Suites and Partitas...

This is for everyone who wants to join!

We can enjoy Bach music together and motivate each other in the process of learning and practicing it!

"I begin every day with Bach - usually for about an hour. I used to torture myself with Czerny, which of course wasn't exactly stimulating for the mind. On the other hand, it teaches you the fingering for a B flat major scale, chromatic thirds, and so on. The daily grind of learning. Later, I discovered that I could get my 'training' under way better with Bach - a refreshment for the body, soul and spirit". (András Schiff, Music Comes Out of Silence, p. 21)

Somehow I didn't see this thread till now, but I'm excited to join in! Here's Bach's F major 2-part invention. I got a little tense at the end, due to trying to balance a dragon mask on my head (and I think I need to be more intentional about breathing when I play...I tend to hold my breath, haha), so there are some musical imperfections. Also, because I thought it would be amusing, I included AI-generated pictures of Bach getting happier and happier.

[Edit 1] Oops, I..uh...deleted the video by mistake. I thought I was deleting a related short. >.<

[Edit 2] OK, now it's back up. Just because, I added a tiny bit of reverb since I've got a close mic setup (free using Davinci Resolve...this is the concert hall setting at 13%). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpHlZfBozQQ

Juan Carlos Olite  Andrea Buckland Ursina Boehm Michelle R Vidhya Bashyam Gail Starr Thank you for the kind words! Typically they'll let me play for a little while and then they make me stop. In fact, a few minutes after the video recorded above, my four year old decided she had enough, so she put herself between me and the piano and started pushing my hands away from the keys, haha. I don't hold it against her--we all have our limits!

  • I am kind of sad today. Somehow the Allemande of the English Suite No 2 perfectly fits my mood. I hope you like it as much as I do. Regards from Switzerland 🇨🇭, Ursina

Here's the 3rd movement of Bach's transcription of Marcello's oboe concerto in D minor (BWV 974). I still need to iron out some unevenness here and there.

For fun, I added some dinosaurs...if they are distracting, minimize window, haha.

Marc M What a joyful and beautiful music! And, of course, excellent playing and the way you illustrated the music absolutely funny and gorgeous. Thank you so much for sharing, Marc 🙂

    • Marc M I don't think I would ever have imagined Bach running from dinosaurs until this video .... hahaha. That's a very creative idea! Nice playing too!

    • Marc M That was great! Loved the tempo, the smoothness of the playing, clarity of the sound.  Was that a cameo of your daughter in the middle there- was she controlling all the Bach illustrations? Looks like a fun way for kids to get into music.

Gail Starr Juan Carlos Olite Natalie Peh Vidhya Bashyam Thank you, you are all very kind! I was wondering what images might accompany the music well, and somehow a dinosaur chase came to mind. It's funny--the kids love the video and ask me to keep repeating it, haha. (No daughter cameos this time, but I foresee more videos with them in the not too distant future!)

Marc M I hope they do!  My son used to let me accompany him on violin, but he did NOT have a knack for that instrument and decided to try singing after 6 LONG years of (frustrated) practicing.
