Dagmar's Compositions

HI there,

I started to compose maily because it helps me understand theory better. These are beginner steps, and I am always open for constructive comments :)

Because I've only playing piano for 5 years, and many of my compositions are theory based and done on the computer, I can't play most of them myself.
If you like to play any of them, text me a message, I can give you the pdf.

    Waltz of Remedy
This is my first composition ever, I did a lesson on another piano beginner platform, and the tast was to use a certain chord progression and create a waltz... somehow it was getting out of hand midway and I started to modulate and add harmony notes etc.
I can't play it myself (at least I'd have to practice it a lot).

And I am open to suggestions. When I composed it I was very proud, because I never could imagine that I could create music myself. It felt very special to see how it developed.
Now when I look at it I am not sure if probably I did too much and going simpler would be better.
Then I look at Chopin waltzes and how their left hand is way less boring than mine, and I think: Maybe it is too simple... and then I am confused haha. On the other hand there's so much I like about this piece.

    Grade might be 4-5..

    Roque Nublo

This is one of my compositions I like the most so far. I love things that are a bit unusual. (Plus I can play it myself! YAY!)
I composed this to understand the concept of chromatic mediants better.
And I made a mistake first: By keeping the bass note (I thought of an ostinato or drone tone) and only changing the top chords, I accidentally changed key instead of use mediants. I later noticed my mistake and so learned a lot about how close things are related!

I love the sound of chromatic mediants so much, not really foreign, but also not completely familiar. Something hovering in between.
It's called Roque Nublo because it reminded me of a sunset I experienced at this spot on Gran Canaria, with low clouds floating by. (The title picture is a photo from this spot)

    I'd say it's around grade 3

Nicely done. Thanks for posting. Totally agree that composing changes how you sense what you are playing.

It is still almost impossible to describe all the emotions I felt, when Laura Toffetti (violin) and Joachim Baar (piano) played my composition at the music vacation recital in Querceto.

I am grateful, honored, overwhelmed, happy, excited, thrilled, in awe, stunned, full with love and so much more!

For context: I participated in a piano vacation course in Querceto, Tuscany, and there was a second group with a piano and a violin teacher. So I spontaneously asked them if they could maybe play it for me one time, so that I can hear how it sounds with real instruments. And when they did, I burst into tears, I couldn't stop it, it was so touching.

What a difference to hear music played with soul, rather than a musescore midi version of something I wrote, but don't know if it is even playable for violin, because all I could do was google the range of notes the instrument can provide.

They offered to play the piece in the recital (after having it rehearsed only once!), and interpreted it both with even more emotion! They really became Elloren and Lukas!

I am also very grateful for the nice comments I got afterwards, from members of the audience as well as the musicians, and our piano teacher Jens Schlichting, whose opinion really matters to me very much.

So this is "About Lukas", based on Elloren Gardner and Lukas Grey from "Black Witch" by Laurie Forest.
