Week 1: Choose your waltz and start Dancing!

Hello Everyone!

Welcome to Week 1 of celebrating Schubert's Waltzes!

Below are some collections of waltzes  that are quite delightful. Take a look and decide which waltz(es) you want to work on during this challenge! Keep in mind that they can be quite short, so it can be fun to pick several!

Let us know which waltzes you pick in the comments below!

Week 1 Goal:

Choose a waltz or several to work on! Let us know why you selected the particular waltz!

Additional challenge:

Post your sightreading/first play through video!

Popular waltzes to choose from:

34 Valses Sentimentales D.779

12 Valses Nobles D.969

Waltz in G (albumblatt)

12 Grazer Walzer D.924

Here's a first attempt at sightreading some Waltzes!  Gotta work on them now.  (Sorry about the wet hair.  Early morning class at my gym.)

Sindre Skarelven But I’m scared to play from memory, and you always knock it out of the park (an American baseball expression 😂 meaning you do GREAT).

Gail Starr I chose the valse sentimentale no.12 for a start and posted my first attempt, but my post seems to be stuck „pending review“. It is very tortured though, so maybe for the better ;)

Nadja I can't wait to hear it.  Maybe the "pending" problem will clear by this evening?

    • Nadja Try deleting and reposting. That might work. Looking forward to hearing your Waltz! 🎶

Vidhya Bashyam Thank you, I will do that. It has been in the pipeline since Monday and I thought I am generally flagged or something, but since I can answer here it might work!

edit: it also got flagged, I  will contact support.

My teacher and I are discussing if there is a level-appropriate waltz for me, and if I should add something new to all the other musical balls I’m juggling right now! But even if I don’t join this challenge by playing, I’ll be here to encourage everyone. 🙂

Gail Starr Vidhya Bashyam Thanks so much! That is a beautiful piece Vidhya! I think we’re trying to figure out if there’s room - I’m at the tail end of finishing the Beethoven Sonatina (both movements), have an Etude and a short JC Bach piece, scales, solfège, canons, and we’re beginning proper music theory this week. Is there mental space for Schubert? I’m not sure…

But I’m not working tomorrow, so I’ll text you in the morning, Gail so we can find a time to chat. Thanks again!

So after consultation with two people whose opinions I respect ( Gail Starr & my teacher), I will happily cheer everyone on from the sidelines! I learn so much from watching everyone else and enjoy seeing the progress each person makes over the month. This will be a fun month for me as I will hear many new pieces being played by my Tonebase Piano Buddies (I think we need a Team Tonebase t-shirt or polo!).

Thanks for this challenge. I have never played it before. Funny enough, I have found the scores in my shelf - an old one. So it is really a sight reading challenge. I love it. 🙋‍♀️

  • Lovely playing Dominic.  Every time I see your and others' wrist action(s) it reminds me to ask whether my understanding of the 'Taubman Approach' is correct, which is that the usual 'down-up' for a slur seems not to be applied, and the wrists have no give in the traditional way, possibly because Dorothy Taubman identified this as a possible source of injury,  The latter seems unlikely as there is a moment of relaxation when the wrist reaches its point of resolution.

Today is the start of a new reconnection in so many ways.  Life happens - enough said.

I am trying for the third time to produce something for one of the piano challenges /TWI.  I have a plan to put key dates in my diary, as I keep missing events and have had no accurate sense of the intended running order.  How long is this challenge? What are the start and end-dates and is there a date for a Zoom meeting?

My piano and flute playing has been spasmodic for weeks not least because I had eight weeks of the wretched respiratory virus, coughing constantly so just too debilitating to do anything.  I need to do several days of several hours a day just to orientate myself again with the keyboard.  Therefore, I shall sight read each of Nos 9 and 10 of the Zwolf Valses nobles in a few days' time, having played again in the meantime Nos 15, 18, 21, and 28 of the Vierunddreissig Valses sentimentales.
