Welcome to the tonebase Piano Community!

Hey everyone - this is Dominic from tonebase 🙂!

As the lead of tonebase PIANO it's such a pleasure to welcome you to the tonebase community. We would love to get to know you! Please introduce yourself in a post below with the following format:

  • Where are you from and what's your favorite food from there? ;)
  • What are you currently working on?
  • What are you hoping to get out of this community?

I'll go first:

  • I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri and you better believe that I love my barbecue! It is hard to pick my favorite food between ribs, brisket, or a beautiful grilled steak, but if I have to decide...nothing beats a juicy, fall-off-the-bone rack of baby back ribs!
  • Currently working on some old favorites of mine by Carl Vine (Piano Sonata No.1), Beethoven (Piano Concerto No.4) and Scriabin (Fantasy op.28) but also adding some great repertoire by H. Leslie Adams (Etude in A-flat minor Book 2), Laura Kaminsky (Alluvion), and Clara Schumann (Romanze in A minor Op.21 no.1)!
  • I am hoping to getting to know and helping all of you achieve your musical and artistic goals. Let's have some fun and get to work!

Now over to you (after some participation from our tonebase team members!)

Hi - Jim from Adelaide, Australia.

just joined Tonebase this week.  After answering the initial questions I have been assessed at Level 9.   I think this is the level of my playing, knowledge and RH BUT certainly not my LH which would be a level 7 at most.   Consequently I am seeking help in getting my LH up to speed.

i can tackle level 7 repertoire fine AND I can play most of Chopin Ballad 1 slowly.

so any suggestions would be helpful.

    thnx

  • Hello,

My name is Tim and I'm from New Jersey (born, raised and still live here). It's quite a diverse state; however, most people judge it by arriving at Newark airport.  I live in central NJ, Mercer County. Favorite food from the state is blueberries, corn, and tomatoes in the summertime.  It is the 'Garden State' after all.

I cannot live my life without music.  It's constantly streaming (WQXR, WRTI, WXPN).  I'm currently 62 years old and have been in education my entire life.  Specifically mathematics.  I taught high school mathematics for 15 years, still working for the Department of Education after 21 years and also an adjunct mathematics professor at a local college. As you know, mathematics and music have a correlation.  I never had any formal training when it came to piano.  I took a few years of lessons, took 2 years of music theory in high school, was ready to pursue a career in voice at a music school after high school, but realized that I probably wasn't very good and would just become a music teacher.  Instead I became a math teacher.  Go figure. I truly believe that I appreciate and have more of a passion for music since it is an avocation and not my vocation.

I've always had a piano since I was 17.  I just bought a new grand, which I adore.  Due to my lack of formal training, my level is a mixed bag.  I can play the first 2 movements of  Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata; however, the third, even though the arpeggios are just inversions, is a challenge.  I can play Schubert's Impromptu in G-flat; however, the trills give me difficulty.  I never learned the 24 major and minor scales.  Rhythm can be a challenge for me.  I'm hoping that Tonebase will help me improve my basic skills.  I'm going to give it a chance for the 2-week trial period, and hopefully the next year.

Timothy Giordano So glad you've joined the Tonebase community.  There are lessons in so many areas.  Try to take the quiz to help determine your level, and then start to follow the recommendations regarding repertoire.

  • I'm Laura and I just joined.  I live in Kansas City and love all things BBQ and Chiefs football.  After teaching piano for 25 years in Florida I returned home and am now an accompanist for school choirs.  I love Broadway musicals and have played for over a hundred community and professional productions.

I can barely reach an octave and that has been a lifelong source of frustration (and pain!) .  It's really limited my ability to play the advanced repertoire I'd love to work on. Several years ago I came across the Taubman approach and am excited to learn more.

I'm amazed by the resources on tonebase and can't wait to dive into the course content.

This photo is from a recent concert at Visitation Parish in Kansas City where I accompanied two high school choirs.

Laura Peden welcome to tonebase!  Sounds like we have a similar hand size.  Last year I started studying with an amazing teacher (Jarred Dunn) who has many valuable courses on this playform.  He’s helped me nearly eliminate my hand pain and tendonitis.
