WELCOME TO OUR LATEST TONEBASE PIANO COMMUNITY PRACTICE CHALLENGE:

Celebrating Tchaikovsky's Birthday!

Letā€™s celebrate the music of Tchaikovsky leading up to his Birthday on May 7th!

For this challenge you have a few options:

  1. Submit yourself practicing his music, learning or playing it!
  2. If his music isnā€™t in your repertoire right now, submit your favorite recording of his music (played by someone else) and tell us why you love it! Hopefully we can hear some rare gems, special recordings, and generally have a great time learning/discussing this fantastic composer!

The watch party for this challenge will be on May 7th and be a joint party between multiple tonebase platforms!

When does this take place?

Challenge start: April 17

Challenge days: April 17 - May 7
Watch Party of selected submissions: May 7 at 11am PT

(Link coming soon!)

HOW TO START:

1. Are you playing a piece of Tchaikovsky? If so, then let's start practicing it and post an update on what you are working on!

2. Perhaps Tchaikovsky is not in your repertoire right now: Post your favorite video of his music!

3. Practice every day and try to post 2 videos a week!

Why are we doing this?

Because we want to challenge ourselves to practice every day
Because learning together is more fun than learning alone
Because we get to share our progress with others (whether video or just text)
Because new music is wonderful and these pieces were written especially for us!
Because we want to meet our fellow tonebase community members
Because we get to hear new music which we might not play ourselves

  • A quick question:  practice videos. Are they to be our ā€œwoodsheddingā€ of the piece, playing it, something in between, or all of the above. Iā€™m interested in joining. I just saw this today. Iā€™ll choose a piece and let you know tomorrow or the next day. Thanks.

    • Jennifer Mehta Everyone just posts whatever they are comfortable with every week- work in progress or fragments. Some just wait to post final pieces.  Looking forward to hearing your piece!

  • Iā€™ve found a very pretty Valse Sentimentale Op51 No 6 which Iā€™m going to have a look at.

Apart from the pieces you list here I donā€™t know much of Tchaikovskyā€™s piano music so this was a nice find. Thank you IMSLP and tonebase for the suggestion of this new topic!

    • Have you come across it before Vidhya?

    • Angela Fogg Yes, Angela. I first heard Lucas Debargue play it on YouTube and added it to the few Tchaikovsky songs on my ā€œto learnā€ list. Lucas played in the winners recital at the Tchaikovsky competition and many other times I think. Hereā€™s a link to one of his performances of it. Itā€™s a really nice piece.

Hi. I've never done one of the challenges before. Is it too late to sign up please?

  • Hi all.  I tried to upload a video tonight, but it said it could not be uploaded.  I recorded it on an iPad, .mov format.  Any suggestions?  Thanks so much!

    • Jennifer Mehta Most of us just create a YouTube account and upload it to YouTube as ā€œunlistedā€ (if you donā€™t want random people clicking on it in YouTube). Then just share the link on tonebase. Looking forward to your video! šŸ˜Š
