Here is my not-quite-as-finished-as-I'd-hoped-it-would-be Minuet in G. I decreased the tempo a bit as the ornaments were not as consistent at the quicker pace (my teacher was happy enough with the ornaments today). I repeated only the first section, as I didn't have time to learn a "clean" repeat for the second section - at least not the way I wanted to play it. I'm mostly happy with it, though I think it was actually better in my initial video - I hadn't quite planned on beginning physical therapy in the middle of this challenge, but having a mobile shoulder is a good thing!

Gail Starr Yes, he is technically entering his sophomore year, but he'll probably have enough credits to "graduate" by the end of next summer. It is already planned for him to begin college courses next summer, but we will need to decide when to have him officially graduate from high school. He's in a program where he'll be able to complete his BA when he's 19.

If the same people are here when he does his recital, we'll definitely try to livestream it. I'm hoping it can be done during the same time as the Chamber Music Festival, or one of their events throughout the year, since it will be a fund-raiser for one of the many Festival programs.

Michelle R That sounds amazing!  I finished high school a bit early, and did a "free" year at our local university where my dad taught.  Do you that Thurmond would want to go to a conversatory for college or a school that gives him more choices in coursework?

    • Michelle R Bravo, Michelle! Beautiful playing! I think you have come a long way with this, and it certainly was a joy to listen to.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful drawing of Martha, by Thurmond. The play of light and dark, blurring lines, and Martha just filling up the whole space with a very characteristic expression. Bravo!

Sindre Skarelven Thanks, Sindre. I do appreciate your kind words. I enjoyed learning and working on the piece. The recording was the last time I'll play it for awhile. I'm learning actual real piano technique, and since I learned this piece prior to beginning lessons, it seems wise to set it aside until the new techniques are more fully ingrained in my mind.

Of Thurmond's recent drawings, I think this one of Martha is probably my favorite. He captures something real and alive in it. And I can't get over the expression on her face!

    • Michelle R  that sounds very charming, Michelle! You have progessed so swiftly through the challenge! Thanks also for allowing us to marvel at Thurmond's lovely drawings.

Gail Starr Gail, I just remembered that I had forgotten to respond to your question about Thurmond and conservatory/college. With his previous piano teacher, he had stated categorically that he would never go to conservatory - but now with his new teacher (since May), he has softened a bit and is considering conservatory again. He loves languages, too, and in our "start of year meeting" he listed music and languages as his top priorities. I don't know too many 15 year olds who eagerly spend half of their Saturday translating "The Aeneid" from the Latin! And he did a year of Russian over the summer so he could 'skip' a year and be in year 3 Russian this academic year. He hopes to travel Europe for a year or so once he's finished with his current academic program - with the desire to study and immerse himself in the folk music and history of different cultures!! (hopefully he'll play, and perhaps sing, a Ukrainian folk song for the next community concert).

    • Michelle R from the last community concert I honestly think that his tone quality has come a long way since last year (I guess due to change of teacher?). Hope to hear many more of his performances ... it's great to watch the progression of the young tonebase members :)

Priya Viseskul Yes, Priya, Thurmond's made a great leap forward with his new teacher. Thanks for noticing the change! He really clicked with this teacher, is now in lessons 2x per week, and they are exploring ideas in a way that really works for Thurmond. He is being challenged to look at things in a different way, and approach his playing more intelligently and thoughtfully. We feel extremely fortunate that this teacher actually had open places in his studio for both of us.

Michelle R He is a young man with some very unique interests!  At my son's high school, most of the students were passionate about Latin and they attended national Latin festivals.  I'm sure Thurmond will pick the right university/conservatory that fits his interests when the time comes,

Here's my Chopin Etude Op. 25, #2, even though it's not really

    "finished". https://youtu.be/NH_z_dvCfh4?si=9sP4wi9rHLKkgufh

Gail Starr I was worried about increasing the tempo because I thought it sounded rushed...so I looked at the "speed" of my two prior recordings.  Week one, the piece took 3 minutes.  Week 2 was 2:30 and this recording is 2:05.  So it's definitely faster, but I'm still concerned that it sounds too speedy and not smooth enough.

Gail Starr Well, I'm super-impressed, Gail. I think you are doing wonderfully. Does it sound rushed? In a couple of spots, perhaps, but overall I think it's really quite good! One thing I would remind my gymnasts when I coached (a lifetime ago, it seems) is not to "anticipate" the next movement - mentally, physically finish the skill you're doing before beginning the next one in a series (this is actually especially important when moving faster and doing multiple advanced skills in a row). I wonder if it feels rushed because you're looking to the "next" thing rather than hearing where you are right now in the moment. It is a delicate balance, to be sure.

    • Gail Starr It really does sound like the piece's nickname "the bees" 馃悵鈽猴笍

Your LH sings beautifully and give really good anchor for the piece. Personally, though, I think RH sounds a bit rush and prefer week 2 tempo. However, I do understand the desire to up the tempo esp when there is a (crazy fast) tempo marking on the piece. I also learnt this a few years back and my final tempo then was still way off ... but then I would just be chasing the speed while forgoing other things ... anyway - that's another of my unfinished business 馃槃

Having said all that I'm still very impressed by your playing and glad you are sharing it and your thought on it with us 馃槉

Michelle R What brilliant advice.  Thank you!  It's so interesting how coaching from one artistic discipline can flow over into another one.

Priya Viseskul Thank you so much for your excellent comments, Priya.

I wasn't even going to make this recording, but this morning some of our amazing friends here on Tonebase (Sindre, Vidhya, Andrea, Harriet, and Natalie) encouraged me.

I'm hoping that a few weeks (months?) away will let the piece marinate and it will magically improve. 馃槀

    • Gail Starr Sounds so natural now! I love how crisp and melodic you play. I am not hearing any rushing but I am enjoying all the spots where you have tiny pauses/emphasis and how the melody kind of fades away at the end. Beautiful playing and thanks for posting an update!

Vidhya Bashyam Thank YOU for inspiring me.  It's really interesting how the more time you spend on some of these masterworks, the more you notice things you can change with every repetition.

    • Gail Starr this has really come along since your last recording! It sounds very impressive. Personally, I think you are so technically secure with this piece that you should consider using those little ritenuto stretches at the beginning of each phrase more sparingly lest they become repetitive. Your tempo is quite brisk now, and you might want to just take a chance and let it flow more evenly - if it's feasible without creating undue strain in your hands, of course. Just a thought.
