Deja vu in Playing Music?
Has it happened to anyone where you're practicing a piece and it feels like you have definitely practiced it before (but most certainly hasn't). For me it's when it comes to playing Medtner's music I just keep having this weird sense for familiarity in both the melody and the patterns of hand movement, and oddly enough, the composer has a few sets of piano pieces named "Forgotten Melodies"...

Not exactly, but it reminded me of a parallel experience I've had:
I was going over some old audio recordings (MD media). I knew I had never played that Grieg piece, but it sounded like me, I could sing all the notes, but I would never make the sound mistakes I heard there. It took a few minutes to realise it was a young student of mine playing.
In your case, I guess the pieces were composed based on culturally recognisable patterns and melodies, therefore "Forgotten Melodies". It must have been a very intriguing feeling.-
Fernanda Machado - PianoClass It most definitely is. Not sure if it’s related to cultural patterns but the composer is from Russia and I am from China, although geographically speaking the two countries are very close, and I have always found myself drawn to the Russian composers…
