The Hidden Secret of Musical Codes in 18th Century Music with Dr. Antonella Di Giulio

Kick-Off: Mozart & Haydn - Music from the 18th Century

When we study a new piece of music, we do not really think that we are actually decoding a message that a composer has encrypted, right? But what if we would learn how to actually interpret this message?

In this Livestream, we will talk about hidden musical codes and how to discover the secrets behind a musical piece written in the 18th century

  • Tonebase is showing two live streams for this time on the same day.  Is that an error?  The other one is about cadenzas.

I'm wondering what piece I should learn?  So many millions of choices!

    • Gail Starr I would look at something I can actually learn in one month and which is slightly above my current level, so that it challenges you to learn new skills and reach a higher level of performance. What is the last piece you are studying? Maybe I can give you some suggestions :)

Antonella Di Giulio I'm thinking of trying a Haydn sonata since I haven't played any since I was a kid?  Do you have a favorite?  The last thing I worked on was for our month of French music, and I tried to learn a little piece by Cecile Chaminade called "Pierrette".  I mostly work on chamber music...Dominic helped me with the Dvorak Op. 81, and I did that along with the "Trout" 2 weeks ago at a lovely amateur chamber music weekend.  I've just started the piano part of the Franck Violin sonata.  THAT will be challenging, I think, but a dear friend asked me to learn it...

    • Gail Starr Wow... Frank's Sonata is really challenging but very beautiful. What about Haydn Sonata in B minor Hob.XVI:32. I would start with the second movement and maybe then add the first and the third if you like it. There are some beautiful recordings by Brendel online.

Antonella Di Giulio This sonata is so lovely…I’m embarrassed to say that I am not really familiar with Haydn at all!  I’ll start working on it tomorrow.  Molto grazie!

Antonella Di Giulio Ho iniziato a imparare l'italiano durante il COVID.  Oggi sono 535 giorni su DuoLingo! 😊

    • Gail Starr Bravissima! Covid ci ha costretti ad imparare di piu` :) Italian can be pretty difficult. I think that especially pronunciation and grammar can be challenging. I am using an app called Boldvoice for my non-native speaker English accent, but I am not sure they have something for the Italian language. "Gn" and "Gl" are very difficult to pronounce. "GL" is definitely very difficult for some Italians as well.

Hi Gail, Would it be okay by you if we both worked on this Sonata? It gives me such a sense of loneliness to privately work on my own... It would have to be quite some quick learning, as I'm going to Hungary on July 16, but so enriching to "play" with you again!

Antonella Di Giulio Ho un grosso problema a pronunciare correttamente “gli”.  Vedrò se “Boldvoice” offre un italiano, perché mi servirebbe un aiuto.

  • Antonella Di Giulio  Looking forward to this new challenge! Is a Scarlatti sonata an option?

    Reply Like 1
    • Vidhya Bashyam I believe there is a Scarlatti challenge already planned next... :) What about some of the Galuppi Sonatas?

      Reply Like 2
    • Antonella Di Giulio Thanks! I will hold off on the Scarlatti in that case. I haven’t heard of Galuppi- sounds very interesting. Will listen to his sonatas. I see you also say Mozart’s early sonatas are an option. Which one’s are those? I have been working on the first movement of k331 (have taken a break from it for while). Maybe a good time to revisit?
