The Hidden Secret of Musical Codes in 18th Century Music with Dr. Antonella Di Giulio

Kick-Off: Mozart & Haydn - Music from the 18th Century

When we study a new piece of music, we do not really think that we are actually decoding a message that a composer has encrypted, right? But what if we would learn how to actually interpret this message?

In this Livestream, we will talk about hidden musical codes and how to discover the secrets behind a musical piece written in the 18th century

  • Antonella Di Giulio  Looking forward to this new challenge! Is a Scarlatti sonata an option?

    • Antonella Di Giulio Yes. I heard this one when I did a search on YouTube and got quickly convinced to start practicing this very sweet and lovely sonata for this month’s challenge. Excited to play a new composer!

    • Thank you so much for posting this link. Wow! I don’t think I’ve ever heard of this composer - what a revelation! That first movement is so beautiful and exquisitely played.

    • Angela Fogg You are welcome... it is actually very unfortunate that many of the sonatas he wrote are lost or maybe hidden in some archives. They were mostly not published or only published later, when he was a bit more famous.

    • Vidhya Bashyam Thank you! Now I’ve bought a CD and a book of 9 Sonatas published by Schott. A little project for the summer!

  • I’m thinking of revisiting the Mozart Fantasy in c minor K. 475, which I learned about 6 years ago and performed but not from memory. It’s got a bit of everything in it.

  • I'm VERY excited about this challenge, and this month of 18th century music!! So much music I would love to play! I've decided to learn a sonata by Haydn, Hob. XVI: 38 in E-flat. I think it's a wonderful sonata, and that this music deserves more attention! I also want to learn something new by Mozart, and decided to go for Rondo in D-major K. 485. Looking forward to practice :)

    • Sindre Skarelven I love the D-major Rondo. It is sooo funny! Can‘t wait to hear you play.  Don‘t know much of Haydn (shame on me!), I‘m curious to get to know Hob. XVI.

    • Andrea Buckland Thank you, Andrea! Yes, the Rondo will be a lot of fun to learn! There's no shame in not knowing much Haydn! I have listened to some Haydn, but have a lot to discover myself :)

    • Sindre Skarelven  Like Andrea Buckland I don't know much about Haydn (beyond the few basic pieces I played many many years ago). I haven't heard that Mozart Rondo either. Looking forward to hearing these new pieces.
