A Brahms Treasure Trove: newly discovered music and rarities (feat. Adam Golka)
Brahms gave us a treasure trove of works for piano, but today we will examine some rarities from his early period with tonebase artist, Adam Golka! He will also share a piece that was only discovered recently in 2012, as well as comparing and contrasting these works to Brahms' late style!

Right from the beginning, Golka imparted interesting information about Brahms that I had not thought about for awhile: Brahms destroyed any compositions that he did not want to be made public. Therefore, what we do have is Brahms's best. It is enchanting that this piece was discovered over 11 years ago! I am so glad Dominic asked how Golka discovered the music. How he came upon it. Great questions!
Golka said the piece has an "Ancient sound...mystic quality"...Indeed!
"Imagine the wrist has its own lungs." Great imagery for the wrist "taking a breath".
It was exciting to hear and see how Brahms "recycled" the music and used it 28 years later!
Thank you, Adam! Your thoughtfulness, insights and interpretations were fascinating to hear. Thank you, Dominic, for expertly coordinating with the scores and music to enhance the experience! Thank you to everyone who asked questions or submitted comments, like..."maybe Brahms played with his beard." Hahahahahaha!
Wonderful lesson!

Looked into the two Sarabande pieces with my teacher after the livestream (so lovely to play!) and in the first piece for measure 9 as an alternative we found a fingering for not having to jump with the hand and it can also be turned into an exercise. Instead of starting the f with a 4 you start with a 3 and ends with 54. It becomes 32432154. And you can then play the chord with 321. Let me know what you think! :-)
