Chopin Masterclass! An interactive event with Jarred Dunn

Jarred Dunn is back, after a successful two week intensive on Chopin ornaments for an interactive masterclass on...you guessed it: CHOPIN!

Performers for the Masterclass:

Alessandro Simone Polonaise op53

Chi Tong Nocturne op62 nr2

Jackie Scherzo op31 (video)

If time permits, we may also hear:

Ko Mazurkas op50 (video)

If you asked to play but don’t see your name in this class, don’t worry: Jarred will be back again soon. Time permitting, he will answer questions you asked about scores, editions, and other topics in the master class announcement/comments.

Thank you so much for introducing Chopin op.50. to us.

I really appreciate your teaching for 2 weeks.

I want to try Chopin Mazurka op 50  through recording.

On 0p.50, no.1 m.5, 10,18.., Chopin uses pedal with the right hand rest signs.

Usually it is not really working if we use pedal and rest signs together. I wonder if Chopin has any purpose for it or not.

I wonder if Chopin' s rubato has any rules ,restrictions or characteristics compare to other composers if there are any unique things. I means he has lots rubatos compare to other composers. I want to know how to decide specific areas which we should play with rubato or not in Chopin music. Ex. Any hint or guidelines. Some pianists  played with too much emotions and others not. I wonder what's the better or ideal ways to play Chopin. Seems to me, he is very unique composer.

Please introduce your favorite pianists, videos, books to know better about Chopin or any general piano music and techniques.

    Appreciate it.

  • I’m not comfortable playing for others just yet, but I’m looking forward to watching.  I just finished the two-week intensive with Jarred and I’ve been left wanting more.  So glad we have this opportunity.

  • Good morning. I would like to play Chopin's Nocturne Op. 72 n. 1. I have been studying it the last few months. I am not totally comfortable playing for others, but would like to make an attempt...

  • Hello Jarred,

I am doing both Nocturnes op.27 c# and Db. I am on the latter right now. There are more  details per bar than I noticed before, such as a  staccatissimo dotted at the end of a lot of phrases(bar12-17)  (I have the National Polish EDITION

ed: Jan Ekier. How do you do 5 vs 4 bar16?

Bar 32 the Leggierissimo broken chord span.. while this is a popular and sweet sounding piece , it is full of hazards even for an advance amateur to give it justice. I would very much like your input. Thank you.  Priscilla.

    • priscillayam do you intend to play this in the master class? If you’re playing it we can talk about that, it not I’ll demonstrate it if we have time.

    • Jarred Dunn No, I do not intend to play in the masterclass. However, I did recorded myself to check, just using iPhone voice memo, not a video,  made a big mistake at the very end - right hand slipped!  I'll attached it here in case you have time to comment or demonstrate if time allows.

    • priscillayam Thank you for posting! 🙂

Hello Jarred, I've been working on Op. 9, No 1. I'd like to get some feedback on this. In particular, I struggle keeping bb 16-17 even and keeping the left-hand arpeggios beginning in bar 59 flowing and smooth.
