Today, Dr. Leah Claiborne guides us through ways to improve your playing based on her recently released books: Expanding the Repertoire: Music of Black Composers - Level 1 and Level 2. Geared primarily toward BEGINNER and INTERMEDIATE levels, we take a look at some hidden gems of the repertoire as she teaches the music and gives us musical, technical, and artistic guidance to aid in all your pieces!

    This was a very interesting lesson! It was a creative way to approach this topic: the way Leah imagined herself as a 5-year old, 10-year old, etc. to envision how her young self would have had played these works that she now knows about, plays and loves.

     

    I like Leah's approach - "along-side of", not "instead". The questions she asks herself as she developed the books are refreshing!

     

    Leah's thoughtfulness and sensitivity to her student prompted her to compose "The Unsung". That was very kind and sweet to hear.
