What are essential technical practices for intermediate player

If you practice about an hour a day, what technical practices are essential ( level 4 or 5) and for how much of that hour.  Right now I practice scales and arpeggios  ( including 7th chords) for maybe 10 minutes a session.    Should I be doing something else?

Hi Joseph, you are doing well. Try to play one scale per day in contrary motion. Begin doing only one octave -both hands parallel one octave, separate one octave, return and finish. Slow to begin with and picking up your normal speed when you feel confortable.

    Have good practice!

  • Hi Joseph,

I guide my students to practice the technical elements inside their repertoire, as it saves a lot of time and brings the necessary connection between technique and artistic performance.

The secrete is in choosing wisely the repertoire and any parallel readings.

Apart from that, I love to have about 5min to sight-read and a little time to play around with the harmonies (and some other elements) of each piece before actually practicing each one.

In short, follow your teacher's guidance, practice consciously, always aim to have the best sound, and enjoy every step of the way. Your hour of practice will take you to amazing artistic results. 😊

Joseph I'm around level 3-4 and practice technique for about an hour if I have access to a piano: finger exercise Hanon, little pischna or other book assigned by my teacher; one-two scale/arps (no 7th chord yet), and double notes. Thanks posting this topic.
