Can we have a tutorial on Rachmaninoff Prelude Op 23 No 4 in D major?

I can’t find any good tutorials on this piece.  I’ve started playing it but would like to know if I am approaching it in the correct way.  Boris Giltburg recently posted a performance on his Instagram and it is fab. ☺️

  • Agree. And Boris Giltburg is a wonderful teacher, isn't he? absolutely infectious love of the music and of teaching others. Maybe we'll be lucky enough that he'll do the Rachmaninoff. 🤞

I am also learning this piece and would appreciate a tutorial.  I agree Hazel I cannot find any tutorials on this piece anywhere.

I recommend watching Irina Lankova's performance on YouTube for inspiration.  This is one of the best performances I have heard of this piece ♥

Emily Silk Hi, thanks I will give Irina’s performance a listen. Incidentally, I just found a revised score which is slightly easier to read by Siloti on IMSLP. It has suggested pedalling and fingerings which are useful.

  • I’ve learned this piece recently and performed it as well in concerts. There are so many ways to play it. Next to Irina Lankova there is of course Sokolov, but also Richter, whom I like very much.

Hi Hazel… take a look at this score. You might prefer the hand distributions.

    Good luck!

Parag Mehta Thanks so much for this. The first section does look a lot easier to read.  I’ll give it a try. Which edition is this from?

It's from the Alfred edition of Rachmaninov's Preludes, edited by Murray Baylor.

  • I agree in the hope of getting Tonebase to do a tutorial of this beautiful prelude! I will start learning it myself :) In the meantime I can recommend this lengthy analysis by a Swedish pianist, Henrik Kilhamn, from his youtube-channel - Sonata Secrets.

I just found out today that Boris Giltburg is coming to my local concert hall in February to play the  Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No2.  I’m definitely going to get a ticket!! 🤗

Add me to the list of those who would be interested in a tutorial on this and additional Rach Preludes. There are some great ones on ToneBase already, including by Claire Huangci (Bb Major, G# minor, C# minor), Boris Gittberg (G Major, and G minor ), Jeffrey Biegel (Eb minor).

There are a lot of us with an interest in one or more of these Preludes (including myself, engaged in a multiyear project to get through all of them as best I can-for the 2nd or 3rd time in my lifetime).  Many of us participated  in a challenge hosted by Domnic:

    https://app.tonebase.co/piano/live/player/pno-rachmaninoff-birthday-kickoff-challenge

The challenges always end much too soon for me! Would anyone like to participate in a thread where we share our thoughts, tips and progress on these pieces? I could cc those who participated in the challenge and see who might like to join in as well as those of you here showing interest in this one.  It might help us all be more ready for the next challenge or masterclass offered by Tonebase.

If this would be of interest to any of you, let me know by reply here and maybe we can put that together.
