    Hi everyone,

I started the challenge last week, but this is my first post. I am really loving reading everyone’s updates and comments. I also really appreciated Dominic's lesson on the piece; it gave me lots of ideas and some good technical pointers.

It's good to know that I'm not the only one challenged by the ascending 6ths in section 5. But my fingering solution seems different--I don't always change fingers when coming off black keys onto white keys. For example, in the ascending passage that begins with a G# and an E, I use 13-14-25-25-14-25. I find that this just feels much more comfortable, and I can still get a fine staccato even with keeping 25 between the 3rd and 4th chords.

    Section you worked on:

    I focused on section 4, 5, 7 and 8.

    One thing you found easy:

For the most part, the left hand is straight-forward.

    One thing you found difficult:

Memorizing. I am perennially challenged by memorizing music! And it does not get easier as I get older!

I recorded a video but the audio was just terrible. Once I figure that out, I’ll post a video.

    • Matt Hope you figure a way to get the audio to sound better so we can hear you . I do think it’s hard to get good audio from a piano with an i phone though .

    • Matt Great job on working hard this week! For audio, what are you using for recording? your phone? I can try and help if I can!

Dominic Cheli I am using a camera, and the problem is I get clipping when the piano is loud. I think my piano may just be too much for this camera, so I'm going to try some other options this weekend.

Matt I had the same problem when I recorded for masterclass a few weeks ago (I was thinking I should redo my video now).  For me anyway, I already have an older USB audio interface from presonus (Focusrite also makes good ones), so I recently got an inexpensive XLR microphone and then control the mic gain so that it can handle loud passages without clipping.

Martin Zimny (from the guitar side of tonebase) did an excellent livestream on recording for piano, although he tends to use more expensive equipment that I'm willing to buy for now:

He also has another livestream specific for guitar which is excellent and talks about different mics and placement.  In any case, probably more info than you wanted as this could be a whole side hobby on its own. 🙂

Yes that livestream was a great one to watch for audio! If you are using a camera, it is definitely possible on most cameras to lower the audio levels so that they are not so "sensitive" the lower levels will eliminate alot of the clipping!

  • Hi, again!

    • Section you worked on: 1-4.
    • One thing you found easy: it’s easy to do it in an interesting way, because the music is very vivid, very exciting.
    • One thing you found difficult: it’s difficult to play it without getting too emotionally affected, and losing the control.

    • Bruno de Lorenzo Love your playing! It is so suspenseful and has wonderful character. I am happy that the "difficulty" for you is not getting too carried away by the music! Thats something wonderful, and as you practice, you can give more into that spirit and the hands will follow!

Bruno de Lorenzo Great playing, Bruno! Full of energy and passion.  Many times I have thought the same: the problem of playing something very emotional without losing the control...

I love your playing.  I wish I could do the repeated octaves as well as you do!
