Tonebase Bach Stage

This thread is dedicated to J.S. Bach keyboard music. We would like to renew the inspiring spirit of the old thread "Group-Journey through J.S. Bach" based on the inventions and extend to the entire Bach repertoire: inventions, preludes, fugues, toccatas, dances of the Suites and Partitas...

This is for everyone who wants to join!

We can enjoy Bach music together and motivate each other in the process of learning and practicing it!

"I begin every day with Bach - usually for about an hour. I used to torture myself with Czerny, which of course wasn't exactly stimulating for the mind. On the other hand, it teaches you the fingering for a B flat major scale, chromatic thirds, and so on. The daily grind of learning. Later, I discovered that I could get my 'training' under way better with Bach - a refreshment for the body, soul and spirit". (András Schiff, Music Comes Out of Silence, p. 21)

After an unforgettable trip to Leipzig Bach Festival, I'm under the Bach music spell more than ever... So, here another monthly recording: the beautiful Prelude in f minor of the Well-Tempered Clavier second book.

Juan Carlos Olite Sounds great--I love how clean your playing of Bach is. It's hard to play Bach in a way that's not "lumpy".

Marc M Thank you very much, Marc! I try to do it, the key is no to blur the polyphonic textures. I always think in Andràs Schiff advice: "senza pedale ma con tanti colori". Without pedal but full of colors.  Of course, it is very very difficult his proposal..., but at least in our practice we should use as less pedal as possible...

Juan Carlos Olite Another gem from you Juan Carlos. and memorized again, which I continue to find so impressive! Your performance does justice to the ingeniousness, logic and beauty of this piece. I continue also to be so impressed with educational component of the WTC. I envision Bach, here, admonishing his composition students, "Look at what you can do with a simple appoggiatura and some basic voice leading patterns -- now go back and study your thoroughbass!"  Thank you for posting, you are an ongoing inspiration.

Another gem, played with loving grace but also thoughtful analysis.  I love your delicate accenting of beats 2 and 4, your careful dynamics and, of course, your charming and varied ornaments.  Muchissimas gracias!

  • I’m relearning the prelude and fugue in A minor from the WTC II,  BWV 889 during the summer holidays: here’s a first recording of the prelude, so it is still work in progress. I hope to make a recording of the fugue by the end of the month. Best regards from Switzerland 😃🎹😃
