  • Hello, I am new to Tonebase and to the Piano.   Just retired, and getting a piano in a few days.  What are some recommended beginning adult piano course books?  I would like to pursue a classical training trajectory that includes sight reading.

Thank you, Dominic..I am an older guy (60s) and am an immigration attorney serving as the Executive Director of a non-profit.  I played earlier in life and the last time I actually "studied" piano I was in High School.  I had an electric piano that I occasionally messed around on but I now want to dedicate some time to regaining my skills and surpassing them.  I presently purchased a 1996 Balwin R series that was a one-owner piano and just had it delivered a few days ago.  I am trying Tonebase in hopes of finding a place where I can re-establish a foundation and quickly (hopefully) surpass where I was some years ago.  Anyway,  I look forward to beginning my re-entry simply for the joy of it.

Hi Dominic, thank you for making yourself available. I’m actually a parent of a young pianist (9 yo). My son is much of a self-pace learner so I believe tonebase could be a good resource for him in addition to his piano teacher. I did notice that the members here are mostly adults. In fact, I haven’t yet to see one minor pianist. Do you have any stats on the age of the members? Is the minor age group a significant one? I don’t expect any of the content to differentiate for minor learners at all, but it would be nice to have the feeling that you are learning with like-aged pianists in the community. I’m not sure if it’s possible to have a discussion thread for the youth age group?

    • Dawn A great question and something we are actively working on. In general tonebase mainly has members over the age of 40, but we do have some wonderfully active younger pianists who take part in the different activities, challenges, and more the community has to offer! It is a great idea to open a thread for youth group! I will work on making this happen!

Hello:) is there any place where I could ask a question regarding specific piece (Chopin’s nocturne op 48 no 1)? I’m curious about how to play a part in doppio movimiento, precisely the 57th bar, where there are quavers against triplets. I know it’s probably not the right place to ask, but I don’t know where else to find an answer 🤔 Anyways, great lessons and happy to be able to try tonebase :)

Ania Isn't this played as written? Notes that are vertically stacked go together. I don't see polyrhythm here.

Hello, I am new in tonebase and I would like to know if you consider an option of English subtitles  or transcription. Sometimes it would be really  helpful for foreign pianists.

Renáta I believe they are working on that because an email went out several months ago asking for folks who could do translations.  I’m not quite sure who to follow up with, but I’ll ask around.  There are many members for whom English is not their first language. 😊

Hi, I just started the trial membership for piano. If I join with a membership in piano does that also give me access to voice and other areas as well.

Lisa I have a membership and it's only piano, all other instruments would be extra.

Just signed up and am in trial period, but listened to your tutorial on the Brahms Rhapsody Op119/4.  Outstanding.  I’m sold!!!

Question: if I have a specific question about something in a piece where do I ask it?

  • Can you help me find your pdf "Piano Practice Breakdowns"? Thank you!

  • The practice plan is a great idea but it is not working great. Some of the lessons assigned were too advanced. I was about to cancel free trial but I found a very well structured plan organised by levels here in the forum, including repertoire. I am following that plan and the experience of tonebase is much better now so I decided to subscribe

Hi, I’m just exploring tonebase via the iPad app.

When I go to the ‘levels’ tab I see my current level and can explore the courses associated with that level.

However, if I try to change level either upwards or downwards via the arrows at the top, then when I look at the courses underneath, they are still the courses from my current level.

So how do I view courses from another level other than the one that tonebase has put me on.

    Many thanks,

    Carl

    • Hi Carl! On my iPad the Recommended courses/Skill & Knowledge/Repertoire changes with the Level (but not the practice plan). I see some courses remains the same over a couple of levels, so be aware of that.
You might also look at the different levels on the Forum page under the Piano level thread, where lot’s of the repertoire is listed.

      Hope this helps!

    Hi Sindre, thanks for that.

unfortunately that is not my experience. Whichever level I choose, the courses shown are always level 8.

For example, when I choose level 5, the page updates with level 5 info but when I click to show the courses it actually still says level 8 at the top and shows me level 8 courses.

    Thanks,

    Carl
