CALL FOR RECORDINGS for upcoming Virtual Masterclass with Dominic Cheli

ANNOUNCEMENT:

We are delighted to open this thread for an exciting opportunity and unique virtual experience for ALL community members: The Online Virtual Masterclass!

Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis (no deadline), so simply reply here with your submission anytime you have a piece or passage you would like to work on.

A new date and time will be announced once we have 2-3 suitable submissions. So please, go ahead and submit your videos to us by replying to this very thread

HOW VIRTUAL MASTERCLASSES WORK:

  1. You send in a video of yourself performing a piece, movement of a piece, or even a passage from a piece. Alternatively, you can submit a passage of sheet music for me to give you targeted advice on.
  2. Once we have 2-3 submissions, I will run a live stream specifically for you, giving you tailor-made advice for your own playing!

It's like if we were doing an online lesson - except others get to see it and hopefully also benefit from the advice I'm giving you.

It's basically an exact replica of an in-person masterclass: you play for a teacher (in this case through a recording), and they work with you while others watch.

WHY?

  • Have you been watching the live streams and wishing you could ask me a question relating to your playing specifically? Now is your chance!
  • Share your music with others and grow by watching them, too.
  • It's basically a free online lesson for you!

WHAT MUST YOU KNOW?

  • It can be something you recorded specifically for this, OR a preexisting recording you already have.
  • All levels are welcome! My advice will be tailored to your specific level, and in the past, we've worked with everything from beginners to full-on concert players.
  • You must be fine with other people watching the video and your performance, as it will be embedded into the live stream itself. I will start and stop it as if we were doing an actual, in-person masterclass.
  • I usually spend about 20-35 minutes per submission.
  • While I will try to feature everyone, if we get a lot of submissions, your video might not be immediately featured. In that case however, we'll run more of these very soon!

WHERE AND WHAT TO SUBMIT?

  • Submit right here, by replying to this thread!
  • You can either attach a video directly from your computer, or paste a link to a YouTube video
  • (If you opt to use a YouTube video, it can be unlisted - no need to make it public!)
  • Please also attach a link to the sheet music.

All right, this should be it! Looking forward to seeing everyone's submissions!

  • I always wonder where people submitted the videos for masterclass. HERE IT IS! I didn't see this thread till now. I have some preexisting audio recordings (not videos). Does audio recording work?

  • Hi Dominic,

Chopin Nocturne Op 27 No 1.

This is an audio recording made years ago. The sound quality is not that good, but, the music flow and shaping should be clear enough.

I used Paderewski edition, but I couldn't find it online. Here I am attaching Jan Ekier edition. Some phrasings are different. Sometimes even note(s) would be a little different in both editions.

  • Hi Dominic,

I am working on the Chopin Etude Op.10 No.5. (Black Keys Etude)  It’s still quite choppy.  Some pointers would be helpful.

Not great at recording, so I tried it two ways.  Both recordings have static.  I tried recording it on my phone an uploaded on YouTube:

and also recorded with Audacity and uploaded it to SoundCloud:

I've debated what to submit (something more polished or a work-in-progress) but since I've been working through the Chopin nocturnes and there seems to be a Chopin trend in the submissions I decided to submit a nocturne that I've had some trouble with so this is a work-in-progress.

This is Chopin Nocturne No. 5 in F-Sharp, which is not as commonly played but my favorite online version on youtube is from Claire Huangci (Tonebase instructor!) .

I'm looking for some specific feedback (in additional to any general comments):

    1. I never had any lessons after high school so have not had anyone evaluate my general hand position and finger action and have always feared that I have ingrained bad habits I need to change.  A run into a wall with certain pieces and wonder if my technique is the limiting factor.

    2. I find octaves quickly fatiguing and especially the middle section of this piece is challenging to bring out the octaves without stumbling over notes or ignoring the left-hand to focus on the right.  Perhaps I'm just not practicing this in an effective way because after a few run throughs, the middle section just gets progressively worse.

    Thank you!

    • Bruno de Lorenzo Well done Bruno! Excellent performance, both expressively powerful and technically detailed! I have already watched the masterclass by Jon Kimura Parker here on Tonebase and this concerto is really amazing. Keep up the good work!!

  • Hi Dominic ! Let's talk about Mozart!

Here is a video of me playing Mozart Sonate nr 3 in Bflat, Kv281.

I appreciate all advices on how to improve on my playing.

PS: Not completely satisfied with the third movement, but was a little bit too tired to aim for a better recording at the time. I also thought showing some errors might be useful.

Here's a link to the sheet music https://ks4.imslp.info/files/imglnks/usimg/e/e9/IMSLP70201-PMLP01834-KV_281.pdf. I've not used this edition thought, I've been using Henle.

    Thanks for all the help!

    • Sindre Skarelven Beautifully played in my opinion . It seems quite hard especially that 3rd section !

    • mariannejhampton Thank you, Marianne! Absolutely correct, that third movement is the most difficult of the three, and it is quite a difficult sonata to play well. There are some passages in the first movement that I had to spend a lot of time on, and even then I’m not satisfied. Even the second movement has some tricky stuff, and to make everything sound as clean and pure like it’s the simplest think in the world… Mozart is deceptively more difficult than it sounds.

Mozart's music is particularly difficult to perform. His admirable clarity exacts absolute cleanness: the slightest mistake in it stands out like black on white. It is music in which all the notes must be heard.
