CALL FOR RECORDINGS for upcoming Virtual Masterclass with Dominic Cheli
ANNOUNCEMENT:
We are delighted to open this thread for an exciting opportunity and unique virtual experience for ALL community members: The Online Virtual Masterclass!
Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis (no deadline), so simply reply here with your submission anytime you have a piece or passage you would like to work on.
A new date and time will be announced once we have 2-3 suitable submissions. So please, go ahead and submit your videos to us by replying to this very thread!
HOW VIRTUAL MASTERCLASSES WORK:
- You send in a video of yourself performing a piece, movement of a piece, or even a passage from a piece. Alternatively, you can submit a passage of sheet music for me to give you targeted advice on.
- Once we have 2-3 submissions, I will run a live stream specifically for you, giving you tailor-made advice for your own playing!
It's like if we were doing an online lesson - except others get to see it and hopefully also benefit from the advice I'm giving you.
It's basically an exact replica of an in-person masterclass: you play for a teacher (in this case through a recording), and they work with you while others watch.
WHY?
- Have you been watching the live streams and wishing you could ask me a question relating to your playing specifically? Now is your chance!
- Share your music with others and grow by watching them, too.
- It's basically a free online lesson for you!
WHAT MUST YOU KNOW?
- It can be something you recorded specifically for this, OR a preexisting recording you already have.
- All levels are welcome! My advice will be tailored to your specific level, and in the past, we've worked with everything from beginners to full-on concert players.
- You must be fine with other people watching the video and your performance, as it will be embedded into the live stream itself. I will start and stop it as if we were doing an actual, in-person masterclass.
- I usually spend about 20-35 minutes per submission.
- While I will try to feature everyone, if we get a lot of submissions, your video might not be immediately featured. In that case however, we'll run more of these very soon!

- You can either attach a video directly from your computer, or paste a link to a YouTube video
- (If you opt to use a YouTube video, it can be unlisted - no need to make it public!)
- Please also attach a link to the sheet music.

What a lovely opportunity you've provided here! Many thanks to to Tonebase team and to you, Dominic. I am trying to talk myself into submitting the Schubert Impromptu in Gb Major, a piece I first learned with a teacher more than 20 years ago and have reworked on my own many times over the years. I'm actually a professional art-rock singer/songwriter/pianist/arranger-producer and sometimes straight-ahead jazz singer/pianist. I've had a fair amount of formal piano training over the years but was not a conservatory student or music major. A lot of my recent "improvements" and technical training come only from listening, imitating, and reading/viewing sources. I'm never intimidated in front of audiences when I do my own thing, but this scene freaks me out a little.
Just putting this out there as public accountability for myself so that I actually make it happen, lol. -

This is me playing the Beethoven Bagatelle Op. 119 No. 1 in G minor.
The recording was in December 2020. I've been focusing a lot of my practice these days on shorter pieces such as these (easier to manage). I played piano a lot when I was younger but this piece is relatively new to me, learned it last fall.

I used a different edition to learn the piece but my edition is copywrited- I think the above link version is pretty much the same.

I understand that this process of recording, and having a virtual masterclass may be out of some of our comfort zones! But I can promise you that we here at tonebase believe in education/constructive criticism as tools to empower, enrich, and hopefully inspire our users to achieve their goals! Putting ourselves out there can be a vulnerable feeling, but also incredibly rewarding! Take your time, and we hope to hear your music when you are comfortable :)

Dominic Cheli I am excited and very nervous to be the first one up at bat for the Masterclass. May I please qualify my performance by saying (a) I have extreme performance anxiety, and (b) I am studying piano as a midlife challenge to myself to pick up where I left off as a teenager and to see what I can accomplish. Hi Dominic. What an opportunity! I have loved learning this piece, but have struggled with (at least) two issues regarding it: 1) using the pedal throughout (I struggle with the pedal, in general), and 2) the ‘waterfall’ section and what to do with it (top of second page). Also, how to navigate all the jumping around while staying secure and focused.
I am coming to the piano as an adult learner and have 3 yrs under my belt after playing classical guitar as a hobby for many years. I’m excited to have some feedback on this new-ish musical adventure in my life called piano. Thank you so much!

Dominic Cheli Hi Dominic, many thanks, and if I may, I need help with a passage of another piece instead - Falla’s Spanish Dance No. 1 - attached here. I think the bass notes really add character to the piece, but they seem impossible to play as written! Would it be valid for me to try this strategy- take the bass G and D with my right, and omit the G/B and middle C - to try to achieve the same effect without affecting tempo ( hopefully) or changing the harmonic integrity. Or perhaps these bass notes are not meant to be played, but if so why did he write them in in the first place… (Also if they were simply markings of the orchestra, they don’t seem to merit that in the passage). Would love to hear your thoughts whether it’s even worth trying to make this playable. Thanks!

Absolutely! Audio is just fine if you like..
You can create a video on youtube just like you did for the Handel Chaconne or you can send in the audio directly!
