Alherne, usually the keys would be taken to the shop to replace the key tops. Either way, I’m sorry this is happening to you. I work in the piano business and can tell you this is a rare issue and it is the first I’m hearing about it happening on a Kawai product. Let us know how it gets resolved.

    • Dave B Dave I’ve copied an email I received from Kawai. I cannot complain about their after sales service at all. They are very good and it must be said that they go beyond the call of duty to protect the Kawai brand. I look forward to receiving this new keyboard.

      Hello Alherne,

With thanks for your patience, I'm writing to update you on the plan for your piano repair.

We accept that there has been a problem with the material used to manufacture all the key surfaces that you've received so far. In response to this issue, the factory have developed a new formulation of the Neotex key surface material, which has, so far, a 100% success rate in resolving this issue. We are confident that it will solve the problem permanently for you.

As such, I have today arranged for the factory to prepare and ship a new key frame assembly for you - this assembly includes the full keyboard unit, and is quicker and simpler to replace than working with 88 separate keys. The new key frame should arrive around August, at which time I will have the technician return to you, replace these parts, and touch up the tuning and regulation to ensure the piano is singing clearly for you.

Thank you again. I will coordinate with the technician from here, and have this problem fixed up for you as soon as possible.

      Kind regards,

      Mark

Kawai’s response is very reassuring. August is a quick turnaround considering sluggish shipping and backups.

Hi. I just picked up a 1969 Steinway B. Cabinet and action fully replace this year with Steinway/Renner parts, and it's fantastic.

I also just bought a Kawai Novus NV10s so I can play with headphones and it's also fantastic because it has a full grand piano action. I had a Kawai CA-901, but replaced it with the Novus NV10s because the action is really that much better.

    • Mike looks like a beauty!  I have been looking at purchasing an old Steinway B but a few that I have tried wasn’t as nice in tone as my rebuilt “O” even though it had a deeper and clearer bass.  A fully rebuilt one did sound much nicer but cost a lot more. I wonder if there is a way to predict what the tone would be like to be purchased and rebuilt.

Victor Wong predict exactly how it will sound...I don't know, but design it so that it sounds as you want it, and sounds really nice, I'd guess yes. It also depends on the rebuild. My soundboard was good. Harp, strings, cabinet structure...all fine. I got a brand new action front to back with new hammers, so that always changes the sound. It's really nice though, and they set it to what I asked for and it came out as I would have hoped.

After months of searching and figuring out not just what I wanted to buy, but how, I ended up at Lindeblad Piano. They're in New Jersey but their business is nationwide. I spoke with a number of piano dealers and never felt comfortable except for the guys at Lindeblad. Several months after buying they have met all of their promises so I'd recommend them highly.

When they rebuild a piano they do it to your specifications in terms of the feel of the action and the tone you're going for, and they are very confident in their abilities to get it as you want it. Since they have a 100% money back guarantee - if you aren't satisfied after it's delivered and they can't solve whatever problem you have, they'll pick it up and refund you or you can pick a different piano.
