Kickoff for the March Mozart Challenge!

Wed Mar 4 at 11 AM - 12 PM PST
Wed Mar 4 at 11 AM - 12 PM PST
Event by Team

To open our March Mozart Challenge, I’ll be hosting a live kickoff session.

We’ll talk about what makes Mozart different — why balance, touch, and proportion matter so much — and how to approach your piece from the very first practice session.

We’ll look at:

• How to establish clean sound from day one
• Pedal choices (and when not to use it)
• Articulation: legato, non-legato, and clarity between the hands
• Thinking in phrases instead of notes

If you’re still deciding what to play, come for suggestions!
If you’ve already chosen your piece, bring your questions!

It Looks OK for me (I’m old, slow and relearning, very early intermediate) but some of the fingering looks tricky, plus deciding on pedal use?

I hope to learn the Allegretto in F Major (KV 15a). We’ll be away from home for all of March (Thurmond was one of 5 young pianists to be offered a month of lessons with Filippo Gorini), so I may not have as much piano time as I would like!

Congratulations to Thurmond! How did he get that opportunity?

Thank you. It was a right place, right time, know the right people kind of situation. We are very happy it has worked out!

I may play a sonata slow movement like the K. 280 Adagio. However, I also like the idea of  about a concerto movement so I may instead do the Romance movement from the D Minor concerto. I'll decide over the next week.

I am playing the 3rd movement to the A major piano concerto (#12 K 414). Good timing as I will be performing this with a string quartet at the end of May.

I didn't know any better (lol!) and started with this concerto in Sept 2023. Trying to play sections slowly almost everyday for about 2.5 years now.. k414(  watching M Perahia and Ashkenazy -YT) .. I can only dream of playing it musically .. heard one of your sound cloud videos and wow!... can't wait to hear your playing the 3rd movement..

You might be interested in getting the TomPlay recording of 414. It’s an app and can be used on an iPad, and maybe other tablets. You can play with the orchestra, change the tempo, play along with or without the piano and other useful features.

I didn’t end up making a video of 414/3 for the watch party. I’m busily trying to get the 3rd movement to performance level.

Thank you Ellen. I have practised (sections) the first mvt and 2nd quite a bit( almost everyday for a couple of years). Even yesterday - I typically read 5 pages at a stretch and then take a break. Then go up and down in tempo 108bpm, 120bpm and have ventured to try 135bpm ( even getting all the notes accurately is not ok for me at this tempo). I usually use YT and use the gear box settings (lol!) with the slider to reduce the tempo so I can hear each note correctly with the score. This is clearly a very slow process and is usually done best when no one is at home for obvious reasons..But I did notice that my chief critics at home have stopped complaining for the past several months now. ( Baby grand at home .. quite loud ) As I sort of figured out how to reduce the sound intensity considerably with a little more control..I don't think I would be ready to perform without a score for another 3 years possibly but now I am immensely enjoying playing. To complicate things I heard an absolutely wonderful recording of Alfred Brendel playing Beethoven's Piano Sonata no 7 ( from the public library) .. a most sublime second movement - and added that to my list ( to be practised with great seriousness). Got the score and am enjoying learning to play that. Then there is the 2nd mvt of Mozarts Concerto 23 .. which I have added and played a couple of times. Have a recording of Horowitz for that.

This is perfect timing, I started working on Sonata No.4, KV 282 in E flat, last week. I'll be focusing on the first and second movements - interestingly this one starts with an Adagio...

I am playing Rondo In A minor K 511.  I would enjoy a discussion of how one should think of, and move through the rising trills in measures 134-135.
