  • This looks like it will be a really exciting session but can't make so will have to see it on catch-up.

We live in Essex in the UK.  Thaxted is where Gustav Holst lived for a while.  He had a house in the town, albeit he wrote 'The Planets' when a house he rented outside of town, after he discovered Thaxted on a walking holiday.

That house/cottage no longer exists as it has been demolished!!

Holst started a Festival when he lived in Thaxted, which was arguably way ahead of its time, as he was intent on being socially inclusive with the musicians and singers who performed as part of the festival.

Holst's festival has been re-instated as the 'Thaxted Festival'.  This is a subscription programme and we are members of this wonderful festival.

The London Philharmonic Orchestra are playing 'The Planets' in Saffron Hall as part of the Thaxted Festival.

Saffron Hall is in Saffron Walden.  Henry VIII expropriated the land from the monastery (there was no monastery) where saffron, the really rare and expensive herb, was cultivated by monks.

Saffron Walden is known locally as 'Walden' but the saffron pops up from time to time.

Roy James-Pike Very interesting, I didn't know any of this and I also live in the UK (Cornwall). Thank you for sharing it with us Roy.

    • Jenny The Thaxted Festival is held mainly in the Parish Church, whereas Saffron Hall is a purpose-built intimate concert hall, each having a wonderful acoustic.  The building of Saffron Hall was funded by a private anonymous benefactor.  The story goes that the architect said repeatedly to the funder, "If we add another metre to the height it will improve the acoustic and it's around a million pounds each time we go up a metre."  They stopped at 拢13 million!

Each of these venues is renowned amongst top-flight musicians, who want to play there - for the acoustic and the cudos!
