J.S. Bach - 2 part inventions group

Hello everyone! I've been thinking about deepening my J.S Bach skills from the ground up, and will start with the 2-part inventions. Does anyone want to join? The idea is to start a practice diary dedicated to the 2-parts inventions. My goal is to get threw all of them, but you can of course practice how many you want! It's nice to have a time limit just to be accountable, so I'm thinking 2 months. That will be 18. july - 18 september. One or two updates a week would be great to stay in the flow. Who's in? :) PS: If you're on vacation and want to join at a later date, is absolutely fine! (PS: I've played the first one a little bit, but the others will be new to me)

Thank you for setting this up, Sindre!  I will watch the course that Magdalena offers to learn how these pieces work.

Gail Starr Awesome, Gail! Yes, Magdalena's lesson is very good! I will start the D-minor next week. This week I'm practicing the C-minor.

Sindre Skarelven Gail Starr One thing I learned from that lesson that I had not thought about before- decaying sound on the harpsichord as the reason for Bach writing long trills. I always thought it was purely ornamental.

Vidhya Bashyam Yes, I had NO idea about the rationale for long trills!  They are kind of tiring, don't you think?  Does your hand get tense?

Gail Starr They are tiring. Are you being measured or free with the trills?

Vidhya Bashyam I'm starting out just doing them slowly and trying to figure out when to end them.  Magdalena said to end them early...but I'm not sure HOW early@

Gail Starr My notes (really Rohan’s) show it ending one note before the last note of the measure. In measure 21, ending on the C in the left hand. It’s probably called out for for him so clearly though because he was little when learning it. Not sure it matters as long as it stops early.

Vidhya Bashyam Makes sense!  I'm going to re-watch Magdalena's lecture before I record my attempt.

Looks like Benjamin Laude also did a livestream on the first invention. https://app.tonebase.co/piano/live/player/bach-invention-1-ben-laude

Vidhya Bashyam Thank you!  I'll check it out, too.  I'm going to start with the d minor one first, though, because I liked Magdalena's lesson about it.

I will join the Bach invention party also! Like everyone else, I’m super busy right now but I can’t resist these inventions and I’ll do my best to make some videos! 👍 thank you Sindre - it’s a great idea.

Susan Rogers Well of course you have to join the Bach-invention party, Susan! This journey is all about discovering these inventions together, and have a good time playing Bach. So whatever you can fit in your schedule is great!

Hi everyone! I would love to join in! I don't think I have played any inventions before, so I would love to try playing them. Perhaps I can squeeze in at least 1  for each of the months of August and September.

Natalie Peh That’s great, Natalie! I have not played them before either. Seems like you have a very good plan!

Natalie Peh I can't wait to hear you!  Are you going to learn the first 2 inventions?  I'm going to start with d minor, just because I liked Magdalena's lesson about it.

Gail Starr I like the one in D minor. I also like no. 13 in A minor and no. 14 in B flat major. Those 3 are in my shortlist at the moment! I think I'll start with the B flat major first,  then decide on the other one. It is such a lovely set of pieces, I be happy with any 2, really.

Natalie Peh I am looking at those three also. Not sure if I have time foe more than two. Great choices!

Gail Starr That's great, Gail! I will spend time with family over the week-end, but will post the C-minor as soon as I'm by myself. Probably on Tuesday.

Vidhya Bashyam they sound so nice :) I'm going to see if I can do more than 2, but I want to see if I can figure out how to learn it while memorising, and play it as well as if relying on the score

Great to be part of this Bach adventure. My plan is simple: I will just start with the first one and see how far I will get (without being too much of a perfectionist) :) and I will also be away for two weeks without a piano in t he middle of August. So if I’m allowed I would like to add a couple of weeks in September. Will we upload here or in the diary?
