Hey everyone - this is Dominic from tonebase 🙂!

 

As the lead of tonebase PIANO it's such a pleasure to welcome you to the tonebase community. We would love to get to know you! Please introduce yourself in a post below with the following format: 

  • Where are you from and what's your favorite food from there? ;) 
  • What are you currently working on? 
  • What are you hoping to get out of this community? 

I'll go first: 

  • I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri and you better believe that I love my barbecue! It is hard to pick my favorite food between ribs, brisket, or a beautiful grilled steak, but if I have to decide...nothing beats a juicy, fall-off-the-bone rack of baby back ribs!
  • Currently working on some old favorites of mine by Carl Vine (Piano Sonata No.1), Beethoven (Piano Concerto No.4) and Scriabin (Fantasy op.28) but also adding some great repertoire by H. Leslie Adams (Etude in A-flat minor Book 2), Laura Kaminsky (Alluvion), and Clara Schumann (Romanze in A minor Op.21 no.1)!
  • I am hoping to getting to know and helping all of you achieve your musical and artistic goals. Let's have some fun and get to work!

    Hi all;

    It's Peter here, from Boston, home of Harvard and the Boston Symphony. Here in New England we're fortunate to have an abundance of fresh-from-the-ocean seafood, so I can easily be bribed with ani cold plate of oysters-in-the half shell or a hot pint of whole fried clams with tartar sauce.

     

    My plan experience began as a youngster when I used to pick out tunes with one finger on our piano's ivory keyboard. This led to taking lessons during my twenties. But then, business school and a career commanded my full attention.

    Now, well into retirement, I'm still enraptured by the piano's beautiful sound and immense tonal range. That said, I'm inclined toward the more subtle works that I often find amazing deceptive in their appearance because each tone must be created with utmost care, as Garrick's eye-opening lesson pedaling so quickly revealed.

     

    At the moment, my focus includes Schumann's Kinderszenen (Traumeri), Satie's Gymnopédie, and Massenet's Meditation from Thais. Next, will be relearning Chopin's Nocturne in E flat major. A more distant goal is being able to do justice to Liszt's Liebestraum.

     

    Stumbling across Tonebase a few days ago was truly serendipitous. I learned so much just from the outstanding sample lessons that I'm suddenly eager to grow my limited musical skills and knowledge. I'm truly grateful to have found Tonebase and its amazing creative team.

    Hi Dominic et al! 

    Thanks for the warm welcome.

    Fave food - creative salads as they can be truly a buffet  all in themselves with a critical balance of acid flavour of some kind (lemon/lime is royalty; but sherry vinegar, a not too sweet balsamic, or wonderful apple cider can also work. I tend to err on too much in general in my salads, and have to go into serious mindful eating to connect with the individual flavours and the blends. 

     

    Just returning to studying the piano after 46 years doing many other things. Very humbling indeed!

    Trying to find the right combination between resuscitation of old friends and lovers (that were in my rep-e.g. Mozart K570, and 332, Chopin 'militaire',  ) with new work to keep it all fresh. it has been strongly suggested that I begin with learning all the two and three part inventions - so I'm working on that. Also loving Berens left hand work to strengthen that appendage in particular.  Picking up from poor sight reading long ago - determined to patiently develop skill. Would love some workshop help in that regard. And of course technique- approaches which have evolved over the years I've been away.  Learning to relax- which in general isn't my strong suit - but if not now.....when?! And I'm loving that. 

     

    I'm trying to share works in progress on a regular basis with as many people as are willing to listen as one of my three priorites for making the decision to return to this focus in my life is to communicate with others in ways that are elevating and edifying- we all need that and we never know how short this life may be.

    Hi everyone!

     

    - I'm Sara and I'm half Italian and half Swedish. I was born and raised in Italy, and my favourite food is cannelloni with ricotta and spinach. I've moved to Sweden 4 years ago and I have to say that I really miss Italian food! However Sweden has a lot good food too if you know where to look :)

     

    - At the moment I'm focusing on Liszt (La Leggierezza), Chopin (Etude no. 7 op. 10), Alkan (Etude no.  5 op. 35, probably one of the most tiring etudes I've ever played), Schumann (Fantasia in C op. 17) and Mozart (piano concerto no. 23). I'm also practicing the first movements of the Cello sonata no. 3 by Beethoven and the Clarinet trio by Brahms as I will start rehearsing both pieces in September. It's a lot, but since I have a lot of free time right now it doesn't feel like too much! I've been admitted to the Master in Symphonic Orchestra Performance that will start in the end of August in Gothenburg, and if the solo repertoire I'm working on right now turns out to be too much, I will have to choose a piece or two to put on hold. 

     

    - Two years ago I was diagnosed with overuse syndrome from too much practice and a not so great technique. Fortunately I met almost right away a pianist that helped me build a solid technique, so that I could start playing again and better. When the pandemic came I had to stop taking lessons because he was based in Paris and travelling was not easy. So watching lessons from a lot of different pianists on Tonebase helped fill in some gaps and helped me not go back into bad habits. From each lesson I watched I have learnt at least one or two things that I still use in my everyday practice. So from this community I'm hoping to keep getting inspired and learn as much as I can about classical piano! And another plus side is that I'm getting into the habit of opening Tonebase (where I can learn something useful) instead of Netflix when I want to relax!

    Hi All,

    I am Alejandro from Spain but living in London. My favorite food is spicy potatoes most commonly known as "patatas bravas".

    I am currently working on Etude in A minor from Kabalevsky and Moonbeams from Barbara Arens because I am preparing for grade 4 exams.

     

    I am here looking to learn from different sources rather than only my teacher and to find some inspiration to learn other pieces out of my repertory

    Hello! My name is Chris! I'm from Lebanon, favourite food is honestly anything I find appetising haha, I'm 16 years old at the moment and I'm working on Liszt's second ballade, Chopin's etude op.25 no.11 and beethoven's sonata no.15! What I'm hoping to get is honestly what Any pianist would go for, proper ways to practice,  refining repertoire, and developing musicianship.

    Hi everybody !!

    I am Manuel, from Madrid (Spain) I´m 56 years old. My favorite dish from Spain is Paella.

    I have just started with piano. I begun a couple of years ago but I have practice more consistently the last year. Now I´m working on Satie´s first Gymnopedie.

    What I spect from such a wonderfull site is some orientation in my journey (I´m teaching my self)

  • Hi everyone!

     

    My name is Andrea and I'm from Perú. Here we have a great variety of delicious foods like Lomo Saltado and Ají de Gallina but my favorite one is Pollo a la Brasa. 

    I'm a music student in a university here in Lima, so I want to improve my skills with this website. I can say that I'm very happy with what I'm learning and with all the information that the classes give me :)

    This is the first time that I write in the community of Tonebase and I'm very excited to meet new people, learn from your tips and also to share my knowledge!

    Hi everyone, this is Kris, checking in from the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm an adult learner with a musical background, but am only in my 3rd year playing classical piano. For best local food I'm going to have to go with the coffee (coffee's a food, right? I mean some mornings it's all I get...). The pieces I am working on now are:

    • Chopin Etude Op. 25 No. 2
    • Rachmaninoff Prelude in G# minor Op. 32 No. 12
    • Beethoven Pathetique sonata, first movement

    What I really like about Tonebase piano so far are the musical commentary and discussions, giving informed historical context to interpretations of composers and their works. Dominic's recent discussion on Liszt and Chopin, for example, was really fun and informative. I'm seeing the seeds of a really great community here, and I hope to learn from everyone!

  • Hi everyone,

     

    My name is Frans Tanya, from Indonesia. I'm a professional worker in capability development areas. Music, mostly classical and jazz, are always part of my life and I'm an amateur pianist who always want to learn and enjoy the beauty of music. 

     

    • I like Japanese food very much, of course with a little bit of Sake (japanese alcohol drink) to enrich the flavour :)
    • Currently, I learn for music interpretation in Bach, Beethoven and Liszt. Their unique compositions are always fascinated me. At the end, I want to develop my own "sound" in piano with deep understanding of composition in front of me and share the beauty with others
    • I would like to expand the musical knowledge and learn from other fellow musicians in this forum
