Welcome to the tonebase Piano Community!

Hey everyone - this is Dominic from tonebase 🙂!

As the lead of tonebase PIANO it's such a pleasure to welcome you to the tonebase community. We would love to get to know you! Please introduce yourself in a post below with the following format:

  • Where are you from and what's your favorite food from there? ;)
  • What are you currently working on?
  • What are you hoping to get out of this community?

I'll go first:

  • I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri and you better believe that I love my barbecue! It is hard to pick my favorite food between ribs, brisket, or a beautiful grilled steak, but if I have to decide...nothing beats a juicy, fall-off-the-bone rack of baby back ribs!
  • Currently working on some old favorites of mine by Carl Vine (Piano Sonata No.1), Beethoven (Piano Concerto No.4) and Scriabin (Fantasy op.28) but also adding some great repertoire by H. Leslie Adams (Etude in A-flat minor Book 2), Laura Kaminsky (Alluvion), and Clara Schumann (Romanze in A minor Op.21 no.1)!
  • I am hoping to getting to know and helping all of you achieve your musical and artistic goals. Let's have some fun and get to work!

Now over to you (after some participation from our tonebase team members!)

  • Hello,

    My name is Alex.

I'm from Massachusetts. But I live and work in Phoenix now. My favorite food from back home is lobster.

I'm currently working on French Suite no. 6 by Bach. I'm also working through some progress tracks in the lessons category. I began a YouTube channel to encourage myself and help with goal setting. Hoping to record Chopin Etude op. 10 no. 1 for the first time this Saturday, perhaps along with some parts of the French Suite too.

I hope to improve my playing by being here. I've given a couple public recitals before despite not having a formal music degree. I enjoyed it so much. Hoping to meet like minded people and continue to grow in the craft.

    Cheers!

  • Hey everyone. I am Malak, I just joined tonebase and am loving it already🙂!

I am from Egypt (Currently living in Melbourne, Australia) and my favorite Egyptian food is Koshari!

I am still deciding on my next piece but most probably anything chopin would do me great.

I am hoping to set a piano learning structure and practice routine with tonebase and see myself moving forward towards an end goal with my practice. Piano practice can get lonely at times, so am excited to be part of community with similar goals that could hold me accountable too :-)

I have been slow at practice for the past two years and am looking to up my game again :-)

Malak Usama Hi Malak!  I have never been to Egypt, but I did attend an amazing online, virtual tour of the pyramids last months.  I would love to visit someday!

  • Hello Roy here, from the UK,

I am really enjoying the units, particularly their scope and variety on musicianship skills.

I'm vegetarian and often eat vegan - in answer to the question about food.

I am a trained flute player but stopped piano in order to concentrate on my facility on the flute.  There was an old adage that, 'You have to play all day, every day, for at least two years to become fluent on any instrument.'

The modern equivalent was that the student would have to practise for 5,000 hours [good practice not ingrained errors], which was then revised to 10,000 hours.

That's not going to be realistic in my return to the piano after all these years, although I have always had keyboards and played from time to time over the years.

I'm revisiting presently lots of pieces that I learned 40 years' ago.  However, I really enjoyed the 'Chords and Arpeggios' Unit with Juliana Han and I am applying that to my pieces, which includes the Community Challenge on Liszt's 'Soirees De Vienne No 6'.

I am revising my scales technique, as the Unit by Penelope Roskell has been so inspiring in re-thinking what I do in terms of hand position, finger action and placement, weight in the hand, forearm and whole arm.

    Thank you Tone Base!

    • Roy James-Pike Welcome .I’m originally from Somerset UK but have lived in the US for 40 odd years . Unfortunately I passed on my love of music to my daughter and she is now a music professor in Indiana, plays flute in a couple of orchestras , has a flute studio , is in quintet etc etc.  I say “unfortunately”as classical music is a hard way to make a living but she loves what she does . Anyway , I hope to hear from you on the community challenge and take care !

  • Hi,

I'm Fiona from Cupertino, California. Where Apple products are designed. I love the variety of food from different countries since we have so many immigrants here.

I'm currently working on the entertainer with simplified right hand. Since the octaves are straining for my hand.

I'm hoping to get the todo list to go away from my main dashboard and that's why I'm posting to be completely honest.

    Thanks,

    Fiona

Fiona Guoguo Lu I have so many problems with octaves!  I can barely reach them and then my hand hurts afterwards.  I understand the difficulty!

    Hi Everyone!

I am an amateur who, before COVID, mostly played chamber music with friends.  Every summer I attend a few amateur chamber music weekends where we sight read together.

I recently retired and finally have time to start practicing again, so I'm so happy to have found Tonebase.

Since I am originally from NYC, I love all sorts of foods popular in New York.  Mostly, I miss the crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside fresh bagels whose enticing scent wafted through the air in the mornings as I walked near Columbia University.  Anything from the bustling, almost-too-famous Katz' deli is also a favorite.

I'm part of a delightful piano club based in Atlanta (mygmg.org) and have been working on the Haydn Sonata HOB XVI:52 (No. 62 in E flat) and the Chopin Winter Wind etude to share with that group.

Plus, I recently got to play Bossa Nova and other Latin styles with a Brazillian singer.

I'm looking forward to learning from everyone here in the warm & welcoming Tonebase community.

    • Gail Starr  Just checked out the link to your music group . It looks so much fun . I belong to something similar but we’re much smaller and meet in each other’s homes once a month . Right now we’re submitting our musical offerings via you tube which has certainly made me aware of all the mistakes I make !!

  • mariannejhampton Thank you for your welcome and congratulations to your daughter on her flute career.  For clarity, I stopped playing for two main reasons, which were that I was always phenomenally busy but never seemed to make sufficient income.  I had 80 pupils when I stopped teaching and was playing four gigs, one of which was piccolo in 'Peter Grimes'!   The different demands were unbearable.  I did not have enough time to devote to my own playing because I needed to teach to earn enough money to live so I had to find a different way.  I continued to play and still perform occasionally with other local musicians, and I still have some dear friends from the olden days, who are still in the business.  One is a soprano and we used to do concerts together forty years ago and we plan to do the same again very soon - COVID-19 permitting!  I am loving my return to the piano and I switching between the flute and two pianos, in the same room!  Have a lovely day in the States!

Hi my name is miranda and I am from Tuscaloosa Alabama.  My favorite food would have to be desserts ( not necessarily specific to my area ). But I’d rather eat dessert instead of a meal.

i am currently working on polishing up Claire de Lune and then hoping to start on The Sunken Cathedral 💝

I am hoping to gain more insight into playing more advanced pieces correctly and making practice more regular (😅 not easy with 2 small kids , church music , and a studio ).
looking forward to growing in musicianship skills with everyone.

Miranda So nice to meet you!  Doing ANYTHING with 2 small kids and a job is so tough.  I barely played piano at all when my son was growing up.  But now that we are (at least temporarily) empty-nesters, I just started practicing an hour a day.

Hopefully, my kid’s university won’t close down again so we can stay empty nesters this semester, 😂.

please post a video of your Debussy!

Gail Starr I feel you there with schools closing down 😅. I have started the lesson On Debussy and after hearing him play it I need to put ALOT more time in to that “polishing “😬. But posting a video would be a good goal for me…way out of my comfort zone
