I will be curious what gets posted here. I have read some good books on composition but really nothing that fits your goal of a step by step manual. this is not a manual at all but a good book on general principles https://www.amazon.co.uk/Musical-Composition-Craft-Alan-Belkin-ebook/dp/B07DVNYQVJ/ref=sr_1_19?crid=1XHNGJF7FP0CO&keywords=music+composition&qid=1683566422&s=digital-text&sprefix=music+composition%2Cdigital-text%2C163&sr=1-19

Hi Alberto, I feel it would be good if you could be a bit more specific. When you say "how to compose and arrange different genres of music" I feel this is a very broad goal. What specific examples of music do you love? What are some examples of music you would love to know how to create?

Pere  Hii Pere, I put different genres of music, cause´ I would like to get involved in the creation of music for films and I supposed, cause i'm searching and learning about that, when you see a movie depends the case or the scene, you can treat different genres of music. In my case I´m from Dominican Republic and we are on the center of the caribbean, we are surrounded by a lot of genres (merengue, salsa, boleros, bachata, son, jazz) and we have to play a little bit of each one for get an extra pay😅. Hope u answer the question...

Alberto Ok I see. Film music seems quite specialised to me and very broad. From a classical music perspective you might want to start with a solid foundation in the theory. Below are two books that I have dabbled in and seem as good today as they did when I discovered them in the early 2000's. They provide a fairly comprehensive overview of close to 400 years of Western musical development. The other two on jazz and film are ones I just came across from doing a search.

Beyond that there is jazz and 20th century composition, let alone popular music styles and film music itself, which seems to have its own broad methodologies built around supporting the visual image. Two quite different examples that jump out at me are Miles Davis recording Ascenseur pour l'échafaud live in one take and Hans Zimmer on Dune. Very different examples but equally amazing to me personally.
