Iām curious about āsurgical useā of the una corda: Is it really possible to modulate the sound by depressing or releasing the pedal in small gradations? Are there occasions when it can be used not just for larger sections of a passage, but for individual phrases, part of a phrase, or even a single note? For what examples in the standard repertoire is discretionary interpretive use of the una corda most suitable? Aside from early classical examples of all-or-nothing use of the una corda for larger passages or sections, are there historical examples of āsurgical useā either written in the score or established in performance practice?

Excellent distinction you made, Dominic, at the beginning of this lesson: why it is more accurate to call the Left pedal the Una Corda and not the "soft" pedal. The Grieg piano concerto performance by Arthur Rubenstein made this evidently clear. The "color pedal" is appealing. Very intriguing perspective. "Four uses" outlined provides the framework to advance with using the left pedal.
