Secrets of the Una Corda (Left) Pedal!

Join Dominic today as we take a look at the LEFT pedal (Una Corda) on the piano! It is one of the most important features of our instrument and in the words of Anton Rubinstein: "the pedals are the SOUL of the piano!"

I’m curious about “surgical use” of the una corda: Is it really possible to modulate the sound by depressing or releasing the pedal in small gradations? Are there occasions when it can be used not just for larger sections of a passage, but for individual phrases, part of a phrase, or even a single note? For what examples in the standard repertoire is discretionary interpretive use of the una corda most suitable? Aside from early classical examples of all-or-nothing use of the una corda for larger passages or sections, are there historical examples of “surgical use”  either written in the score or established in performance practice?

Michael, those are excellent questions. I am unable to attend the Live session, so I look forward to viewing it later and hearing the answers to your thoughtful, intriguing questions.

    My questions:

Dominic, what do you view as the most significant challenge regarding the left pedal?

    Its greatest strength?

    Optimal times to use it?

Creative ways to use it that many may not know about?

When to be cautious about using it?

Do you think one's understanding of its appropriate usage "evolves" as a pianist matures or gains more experience?

    Thank you!

Please also discuss how the condition of the hammers affects the “surgical” use of the UC.

Excellent distinction you made, Dominic, at the beginning of this lesson: why it is more accurate to call the Left pedal the Una Corda and not the "soft" pedal.  The Grieg piano concerto performance by Arthur Rubenstein made this evidently clear.  The "color pedal" is appealing. Very intriguing perspective. "Four uses" outlined provides the framework to advance with using the left pedal.

Thank you for all the wonderful examples!

The importance of language and deeper meaning is powerful, too. I had not thought of that. It broadens my understanding and I am grateful for that.

Una Corda - technical marking and expression marking...interpreting music "with a bit of fantasy...".

You are very skilled in making the complex easy to understand.

The food analogies are delightful, too. Yes, very true regarding the "seasoning".  Oh, yes!

Thank you, Dominic! Thank you, Michael and others for the great questions!
