  • I’m beginning to learn basic ensemble playing, partnering with my friend Martha who plays the flute. So, my submission for this recital is a recording of our duet. It‘s the second movement from Bach’s Flute Sonata in E-Flat Major (BWV 1031), also called the Siciliano. (Another friend recorded this for us on an iPhone, just using the video setting.)

I’d frankly been hesitating to join the recital this time, after learning that Ching Lee Goh would be performing Kempff‘s arrangement of the same Siciliano. But I’m hoping some may find interesting the contrast between the original flute sonata (played here with piano in place of harpsichord) and Kempff‘s more complex, solo piano arrangement. (The beautiful Kempff arrangement is high on my bucket list, but it‘s still way beyond my ability to play!)

    • Peter Golemme Peter Golemme Thank you! I also love this little recital hall inside the conservatory in SF. (Martha and I take a group piano class in the Continuing Ed division there.)

  • Ok I’m going for it! I had my follow-up post surgery visit and got my stitches out yesterday and the Dr cleared me to play again with no restrictions on large reaches or trills, etc…..so I’m going to still join and perform live and play:

    Brahms - Intermezzo in A Major Op 118, No 2 ❤️

I’ve got some catching up to do to polish this up but it’s really close 👍

Since I won't be at home to play live, here is the P&F I've been TRYING to learn for many weeks.  Book 1, D major.  It still has to "bake" for a while longer, so I'll leave it alone and see if it magically improves on its own!

Gail Starr That's great Gail.  Really clean and clear details and very nicely nuanced throughout.  A nice, bright, quick tempo for the Prelude, which is often played too fast IMO, and which I know from experience is very difficult to maintain while playing the motives so smoothly and consistently.  I also like the 'overdotting' in the fugue, have spent much time wondering whether I should play it that way, & you make a convincing case for that!  and the slight extra weight for the first note of the subject, maintained consistently throughout, -- beautiful.  Really well done! can't wait to hear your other WTC offerings, and don't forget to post on our Bach thread as well!

Gail Starr Really beautiful, Gail! I like very much your Bach playing: with steady fine rhythm, splendid clarity in the phrasing and catching expressive energy. Bravo, love it!

Gail Starr absolutely beautiful! Your clarity of line is beyond admirable. If this still needs to bake, I can’t imagine what it will sound like once it is cooled and served! Bravo!

Peter Golemme So glad you like the "overdotting"...I came up with that to make it (hopefully) sound more regal.  I don't know if it is considered "correct" or not, though.

Gail Starr I wouldn't worry about whether the over-dotting is certainly considered correct  -- it certainly works here.  Baroque keyboardists were given a lot of freedom in rendering performances,. Magdalena Stern-Baczewska recommends over-dotting in appropriate places inher lesson on the dance suites, and I think Dominic says the same thing in one of his Bach livestreams. This fugue is very much like an overture and I think the over-dotting enhances that feeling of stateliness.

Gail Starr Yes I have played this one, though not ever having brought it up to performance level. But it's  on my list to do so as I endeavor to slog through the entire WTC and learn & record as many as I can during my remaining days on this good earth. I've got 3 that seem to be about as good as they are ever going to get, & I'll be posting them on the Bach thread so that I can then move on to some others..
