  • Just watched this live stream, and I must say there were lot's of gold inside it! Thank you so much, Julia and Dominic ! I've made several notes. I think the number one thing was understanding the gap (or limiting the gap) between what you hear and what you play. As a pedagog, understanding the student's ear.

Also some great memorization tips! And just a very insightful and enjoyable conversation.

    • Sindre Skarelven I’ll have to go back and watch the rest - I was only able to join the beginning and then I had to…….go teach! :)

I just watched this, too, Sindre! I found it very captivating. I think it is quite endearing to hear such a gifted teacher talk about wanting to do that (teach) since the age of 5! Also, that Julia didn't want to be "the center of attention", to be "behind the scenes". It is vital to know oneself - - to determine what works best for oneself...to share and promote this beautiful art.

I loved the conversation between Dominic and Julia. Beginning with Dominic's appreciation of Julia's reputation as an exemplary teacher with wonderful students.

The depth of this conversation was enthralling. Julia's analysis of the music and her candor was refreshing. And all of her Master's Degrees and Artist's diplomas in various countries! Wow! So impressive!

Julia - asks of her students, "What are they searching for?" I see the similarities Julia highlighted between a "piano pedagogue" and a "tennis coach". She wants to understand her students' ears - how they hear. Julia asks, "Where is the bug?"

The music coach is a link between the student/what they hear and what they can perform.

Julia is obviously quite skilled in analyzing a situation with a performer...in finding the "bug".

"Think right when you practice." Don't internalize the negativity from the practice room in difficult passages. Practice in a good psychological space - in a comfortable feeling. Don't be afraid of difficult passages.

It's a good idea to play the piano at any age. :D

    Simplify the difficult parts.

Thank you, Julia! Thank you, Dominic! Thank you to all who asked excellent questions!
