Bach Invention No. 1: Analysis for Performers (June 22)

One of the staples of the intermediate piano repertoire, Bach’s First Invention is a paragon of imitative counterpoint. Laude reveals the contrapuntal inner-workings that give shape to the Invention, and tackles the pianistic challenges that flow from Bach’s ingenious interplay of voices.

    A few questions:

    - If you listen to recordings of Invention #1 (e.g. Gould) some pianists add their own ornaments.  Are there "rules" to follow on adding your own embellishments to Bach that are not indicated in the original score.

    - For a simple piece like this, is there a benefit to using a touch of pedal in any places or best to not use at all.  In general, when do you think using pedal in Bach is appropriate/useful.

    Hi Brett Gilbert ,

Thank you for your questions! I'll be addressing them in my presentation tomorrow. See you there in the chat!

  • Ben's live stream about the first Bach Invention was fantastic! The analysis was so enlightening and helpful to my development of this music.

Also, since he mentioned Victor Borge I thought to post a link to a short video of his piano comedy. I couldn't remember him by name but once I saw the clip I remembered seeing him on television as a child. It's hilarious and worth the five minutes to view!

Thanks so much for this. This was so wonderful. (I love listening to Ben Laude talk about theory.)

Would love to see this (especially the Tonality and Form portion) for all the inventions.
