Hi, as a newbie I’m working in Anna Magdalena’s pieces and also interested in other easy pieces but my goal would be capable to learn the first Fuga

    Excited about the livestream.

I’m working on Prelude and fugue in F minor, BMV 857, and this has become my favorite, after learning and struggling through the fugue especially for the past 2-3 months.

  • The last piece by Bach that I learned (quite some time ago, though) is also one of my favorites: Prelude and Fugue in C sharp minor BMV 849. Other favorites include the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, the Fantasia in C minor BMW 906, the 2nd English Suite, and almost all of the Partitas (definitely No. 2-5). I might try to reactivate that C# min P&F from WTK 1, but I'm vacationing in Europe for 2 weeks so practicing, let alone recording, would be challenging at the moment.

Thurmond asked that I post for him - he started working on the G minor Prelude from book 2 a few days ago and recorded a video of one of his practices today.

  • I'm working on the G major, the C# major, and the C# minor preludes Book 1. My favourite piece though is the D minor violin Chaconne, hands down! I love the C major prelude bk 1 for a warmup. And, current favourite recording is Evelyn Crochet's recording of WTC Bk1.

    • Emma Wallace Also all of the partitas, and English suite no. 2 and 3. And the French Suite No. 4, especially the Allemande. Playing the Allemande was what first made me fall in love with Bach.

  • Hello, I am working on the English Suite No 2 by Bach. I want to do the LTCL exam at the end of the year, and I am so lucky that it is on their repertoire list and that Tonebase has such wonderful lessons about this suite. Unfortunately I missed the livestream as I've only joined Tonebase mid of June. Best regards from France, Ursina

As some people may be tired of hearing by now, I'm trying to work my way through the entire WTC. I've started at the beginning of Book I and the end of Book II and working inward, trying to get through all of them, at least to the point of working out the fingerings, and stopping along the way every now and then to try to learn one properly. Right now I'm learning the F Major from Book II.  Almost got the Fugue memorized, don't know whether I could EVER memorize that Prelude! But almost ready to perform them.  Unfortunately I'll be away from my piano for another week and won't be able to pull it together for this session, but I'll be sure to tune in and hear what Evan has to say. Any specific comments on the F Major will be soaked up, but I know it will all be interesting.

Peter Golemme This P&F has moments that feel very "Goldberg-y" to me.  Do you find that also?

      Peter Golemme hi Gail,

Thanks for sharing your impressions of this prelude and fugue

I am so in awe of the Goldberg  Variations, that I would not even dare to think about playing them, nor even to think  that I am playing a piece that sounds like them!.

I’m going to try to consolidate my WTC comments  on a single  thread if possible— i. E.  the “ToneBase Bach Stage” thread established by Juan Carlos. I see you have posted over there also. I’ll have some more thoughts on my F Major Bk 2  there.  AND I’ll want to hear about what’s going on with your forays into the well tempered Clavier! I seem to recall that you were going to undertake the BK 1 C Major or Minor or both?  See you there!

  • I am trying to polish up the Prelude & Fugue No. 2 in C Minor which I learnt when I was young, but never truelly mastered.

My favourite to listen to are the Goldberg variations - I used to listen to the Glen Gould recordings, although now I quite enjoy Lang Lang's interpretation.

Craig Waddington have you had a chance to hear Vikingur's newest on Deutsche Gramaphone?  Very fresh and new!

Patrick Bentolila The piano actually adds a bit of charm and mystery to the piece.  Good job!

    • Gail Starr 😊❤️ There's not much else to do but try to get the most beautiful melodic substance out of a piano that's missing notes. At least I have an instrument to practice on until my father gets nice and buys me a decent piano.

I am learning the Andante movt of the Bach organ sonata in e min as arranged by Stradal.   Can anyone point me to the score of the complex additional trills Vikingur Ólafsson inserts on the last page?  After listening to his version the last page of the transcription sounds a bit lame!
