Week 2 Thread: The Era of Haydn and Mozart! 🐴

Welcome to the Main Thread for the third week of "Mozart & Haydn - Music from the 18th Century" challenge!

This week, we will talk about the different ways composers were trained during the 18th century and how they could achieve such high productivity through schemas and patterns

Look at a different piece by the same composer you are studying and try to compare the music to the new piece you are practicing now.

If you are ready, post a short clip of the patterns you found in your music! One of the ways we grow is through feedback and self-reflection.

Pick a piece from the suggested repertoire according to your level or share any piece written during the 18th century that you have been working on!

If you want to describe your process, feel free to use the following template.

  • Piece(s) you have been working on:
  • Things you found easy:
  • Things you found difficult:

Happy sharing 😍

  • Hi Dr Antonella, hi everyone!

I'm in the middle of learning Mozart's Sonata in C major K309, and this is the 2nd movement. It's grown on me, even though I didn't think the 2nd movement was as much fun as the 1st movement in the beginning. I need to work on this more thoroughly. I find the ornaments challenging in this piece.

    • Natalie Peh Thanks! It is already very good! Good job!

If you would like the phrases to sound much more beautiful, maybe think the end of each musical phrase a bit softer.

Also, follow the phrases with the movement of your wrist, which you already do, but not everywhere!

But it is very good already :)

    • Antonella Di Giulio thanks very much for the feedback, Dr. Antonella. I will work on the phrasing, and be more aware about the wrist movement too

    • Natalie Peh my pleasure! Sometimes we are so focused on notes that we forget that also our body has to feel relaxed and comfortable while playing :)

    • Antonella Di Giulio that's so true. I'm going to try singing along with the melody the next time I practise this. I am wondering if it will help, especially with breathing while playing  :)

    • Natalie Peh I think you might try to sing the phrases for yourself without the piano or maybe accompanying yourself with the left hand and then imitate what you were singing with the right hand.

    • Natalie Peh Well played, Natalie! I thought you were particularly good with all those long and fast runs. Looking very much forward to hear how you progress with the singing quality of the melody. But already beautiful playing!

Antonella Di Giulio I love your idea of singing the phrases without the piano.  When I was traveling for work all the time, that was how I could "practice" a bit without a piano!

  • I was able to make a recording of the Slow Movement; it ends on the Dominant, with an Attacca to the finale, but I still have to work on that. I know the last few notes are a little too fast, but that shouldn't be much of a problem to fix.
