Week 4 Thread: The Meaning in Music 🕴

Welcome to the Main Thread for the fourth week of "Mozart & Haydn - Music from the 18th Century" challenge!

Where is the meaning in a piece of music written in the 18th century for keyboard only? Is that music meaningless? Or was this type of music only composed for solely entertainment purposes?

Try to find the meaningful elements in the music you have studied this month

And… Post a clip of your beautiful performance!

Pick a piece from the suggested repertoire according to your level or share any piece written during the 18th century that you have been working on!

If you want to describe your process, feel free to use the following template.

  • Piece(s) you have been working on:
  • Things you found easy:
  • Things you found difficult:

Happy sharing 😍

As I mentioned in a previous post, my friend and I are preparing the Mozart D minor concerto. We had our first attempt to get it together today. We recorded the exposition of the first movement tonight. It’s not good yet, but I would really love some feedback, especially regarding balance. Thank you.

Actually, I don’t like my touch in the first video, so we made another. In the second one, I tried a touch which used speec of keystroke rather than pressure and I think i5 works much better. I will just need to add a bit of pedal here and there I think.

Antonella Di Giulio thank you. Hopefully I can achieve this. I will show you if I come up with something.

    • Jackie I am sure it will be great. The first time is always difficult... :) But going out of the comfort zone is always beneficial to the personal growth of each one of us.

I am always late to these because I am so busy once I am back on campus, but here is Haydn Sonata 19 MVT 1 Adagio with some mistakes. I had it memorized over the summer. This video is from May… it is such a pretty movement.

Natalie Peh thank you so much!

it was my first Haydn Sonata. It’s so pretty and taught me a lot about subdividing… and patience

    • Denise it is a very pretty one, this piece. Hope it's the first of many!  I have a soft spot for Haydn sonatas too, and have shortlisted a few for future projects :)

    • Denise Beautiful!

I am sorry I missed this post :)

      It such a beautiful performance.

Maybe in such slow movements it would help to connect the phrases through a bit more tension: many of my teachers always explained that as feeling as somebody is slowly pulling the sound throughout the piece.

Antonella Di Giulio I agree! :-) This was back when I was learning it. I subsequently memorized it and played it at a studio class this summer. Unfortunately I do not have a recording of that... so it was much more polished. I do love how beautiful this movement is. I am in no way an accomplished pianist, just strive to get better. I am grateful for your feedback! :-)  I work a lot on phrasing with my students. It's sooooo important!

I see in your profile that you teach at UB! :-) I am originally from Buffalo. Just had to add that!  Must be beautiful outside about now.
