Virtual Masterclass feat. Mozart and Chopin

In today's masterclass we feature the music of Mozart and Chopin! One of Chopin's favorite composers was Mozart, and there is a lot to learn from each composer to improve our overall playing!

  • Thank you again, Dominic , for this great masterclass! I learned a lot from it, and I think you pointed out exactly what I needed. I purposefully didn't post any questions for this, because I wanted to see what you would say from a clean slate. But what you brought up was exactly what I would have asked about. The trills and ornaments in particular. Also "the motor" and the dynamics. What you pointed out make total sense, and will bring a higher level to the performance. I will of course rewatch, and look forward to be working on this piece again with new insights! PS: I hope many discovered how fun and great this sonata is. I think it deserves more attention, and it always brings a smile on my face :)

Lots of great learnings on the muzarka as well! We all love that one. Thank you so much, Tammy for posting this! TT2020

I hope everyone watching learned/will learn something from this class! :)

Thank you for this LiveStream! I enjoyed it!

Thank you, Sindre! Bravo! Thank you, Tammy! Brava!

Excellent question from Tammy about changing fingering well into learning a piece.

Brain - override muscle memory. Not an easy feat at all, as you said.

Interesting approach to segmenting - "jump to it at a fresh place". There is a surprising similarity to something I recently learned in another arena: relational/interpersonal communication. What you do in a situation, repeatedly, is what you will do in a pinch. So one must train oneself.

Yes! That jumping back is absolutely understandable!

The grace notes can open it up ("tear apart the timing") and make it more"hypnotic"... "intoxicating". Such a wonderful choice of words! Quite accurate!

It does feel like Chopin is improvising to himself. I can see the appeal for Jazz musicians, too.

    "Mystical quality" - Indeed!

I think your approach with the brain doing the work is most appealing. It requires more patience and study. And it is more lasting and stable to my way of thinking.

I like separating the LiveStreams by a day - either T and Th or M and W.

    Enjoy your travels, Dominic!

Interesting analogy with weight lifting. I see. I would still prefer the most natural way to practice that you said you prefer - the authentic movement that one will do in performance.

    Thank you, everyone!
