    This is very interesting! Dominic, thank you for putting the words on the screen as Professor Parker was listing things. It is quite helpful! It enhances the clarity of the lesson significantly!

    The marking up of the scores were incredible - - such analysis!

    Highlighting the Charlie Chaplin quote was fascinating, too.

     

    Recording and analyzing any situations that didn't go as expected is crucial, yes.

  • The advice here is great for musicians still in the confines of the academy. For those of us in the real world, I've let go of the "necessity" of memorization. 99% of audiences simply don't care, or they don't seem to notice.  Many international performers (such as Yuja Wang) are now using scores regularly in performance. I was able to triple the amount of rep I could get through per year by not obsessing over having things memorized. It really goes back to the question of what we're actually trying to do as musicians: learn as much diverse rep as we can in our lifetimes, or limit the number of stuff we can learn because of an obsession over memory? The answer is obvious.
