  • Here's my final performance for the challenge. Thanks to everyone for the journey we've had together learning new pieces :)

Now I need to but this one aside for a bit, but look forward to work more on it later and hopefully perform it on the June recital.

    • Sindre Skarelven I am truly just in awe that you not only learned that piece in just one month but that you already have it so perfect too!  Just stunning!

    • Sindre Skarelven bravo! Apart from the jaw-dropping feat of learning this huge piece in just one month, you really manage to tell a compelling story. Every build-up to forte or fortissimo, each receding into mysterious piano or mezza voce murmurings seemed internally motivated, never superficial or artificial. Really, really good.

    • Alexander Weymann Thanks so much! I’m glad you picked up on those details. It’s still a long way to go of course, but I love the storytelling with this ballad (and the others).

Here my final video for the challenge. I've really enjoyed learning this piece, a truly meditation about death of a young Rachmaninoff. There are many details to adjust, but I'm quite satisfied with the result. I'll keep working on it. It has been great to share with you this monthly challenge.

    • Juan Carlos Olite you play this piece so beautifully and you’ve inspired me to resurrect it and brush off the dust and make this one a priority again. You also brought out the melody so clearly and thoughtfully in that second half. Just truly stunning all the way around!!!!

      Fantastic!

I like the way you took your time in the second half, to let the piece breathe.

Very dramatic, and poignant at the end.

Juan Carlos Olite Oh, Juan Carlos! I closed my eyes and let myself feel the music. Such pain, such turmoil, and such beauty - you captured the spirit of this piece so well. Thank you.

    • Bravo Juan Carlos Olite !!! Breathtaking and so much emotion! I love the tempo and that you are taking time to savour and not rushing through it. I got goosebump on the return to the main theme. Very well played!

    • Juan Carlos Olite Bravo, Juan Carlos! That felt so deep. All the emotions, the yearning, the desperation, the resignation. I like to think there’s some hope to in this beautiful melody, at least as a message. Very well done!

    • Juan Carlos Olite Very powerful performance! So much heart and soul in this piece- and you bring it all out. Amazing Rachmaninoff wrote this as a teen!

    • Juan Carlos Olite stunning; a joy to listen to. You come enviably close to Rachmaninov's own recording, at least the one I know and from which I first got to know this piece when I was a teenager myself. You sound just like him - and still very personal, making the piece your own. Quite moving. Thank you.

  • Here's my submission for the Debussy Golliwogg's Cake Walk.

I had a lot of slips today so getting a clean run through turned out to be quite an exhausting business (lost count of the many takes and false starts) ... though I'm glad I finally got a somewhat decent one in the end.

It has been my plan to eventually learn all the pieces in the Children's Corner Suite so I'm happy to have picked it for the challenge. Three down, three more to go. I hope you enjoy it :)
