  • Uploading my progress on Chopin Nocturnes Op. 55! I just came back from my travel (went to NY and Baltimore to see concerts by Yunchan Lim and Minsoo Son!!!) yesterday and took a shot of my nocturnes. Might not much improvement.. or even degraded cause I wasn't able to practice much last week. I also feel I'm at that period of time of transitioning from practicing to be more fluent comportable for live performing in mid May.

It was a great expericnce exchanging progress with folks here, it's very motivating and great to know that there are so much energy going into making music. Will be happy to join future threads too! Thanks!

Miyoung Choi Beautiful playing, Miyoung! Pure Chopin in two of his most gorgeous nocturnes.

    • I took another take. I'm still trying to polish it up more. I saw that there's a watch party of this challenge scheduled for live, so I'm submitting my latest take. I will also make more recordings playing with a Yamaha C7 grand this weekend. If it goes well, I'll make another submission. Thank you!

    • Miyoung Choi I didn't comment on your last video because I can't bear listening to electronic keyboards - I just get bored. Your technique looks to be flawless. Please put out a video on a normal piano with strings. I would love to listen to it.

    • Alrighty.. took a recording with Yamaha C7.

It was the first time playing these pieces on an acoustic grand piano.

It's always a good surprise for me to realize how those acoustic grand pianos are much louder (in a nice way) with greater resonance, whenever I move from practicing on my hybrid digital piano. I wish I can own a grand piano someday :)

Ok, here's my final submission for this challenge (with added commentary for fun lol): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPGFox7s7Cw

Different mic setup again...picture attached in case you're curious. I went for the "EBS" 90 degree angle, 25 cm apart, just above lid to avoid lid reflection sound. I think it captures a bit more dynamic range this way.

It was a pleasure cramming piano practice with y'all this month! :)

Michelle R Vidhya Bashyam Sindre Skarelven Thank you! You all are very kind, and I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the commentary. I always have the worry that people will be annoyed by my amateur pianist chatter, haha. But I do like sharing whatever crosses my mind as the music progresses. Like how in college a friend would play a passage, say why it’s cool, and then suddenly I’d hear the passage differently as a result. I’m sorta kinda trying to replicate that.

Andrea LeVan Thanks. The program I use is CapCut Desktop…it makes it pretty easy to throw text into videos. It's much more user friendly than Davinci Resolve.

  • Haydn Sonata in C# Minor: Scherzando. Excerpts.

A snapshot of my progress after 4 weeks--still a little rough, but it was worth the challenge.  I may try to finish this and learn the rest of the Sonata over the summer.

  • I have greatly enjoyed being part in this engaged, international community. Thank you all. It really pushed me to bring together a number of concepts I have been trying to absorb from online learning. (This great lesson was the first Scriabin piece I worked on: https://app.tonebase.co/piano/library?tbModal=courseModal&tbModalSlug=nicolas-namoradze-teaches-etude-op-2-no-1-composed-by-scriabin) My "Play 'n' Practice" app tells me I have spent 40.45 hours learning this now over 5 weeks. For me, the recording takes time. You don't want to know how many takes.
