Here's my video, in which I allowed myself to include two images, because of the visual meaning of the piece. I've really enjoyed learning this kind of music, which I don't usually play. It's been challenging to achieve the sonority I was imagining in my mind, with all those pianissimos here and there. But, it's definitely been worth it.

Thanks, Dominic, once again for the chance to explore new pieces through these challenges.

You convey a very special mood this. Pictures and tones working very well together, and I could definitely feel the footsteps and the slower texture of winter. Bravo, Juan Carlos!

hauntingly beautiful is indeed a very apt description.  Your playing conjures the scene.

I've probably heard this piece a hundred times, but I don't know if I've ever taken the time to slow down and truly listen to it. Beautifully played, you gave it so much care! Thanks so much for sharing!

Thank you so much for your kind words. Debussy's music invites you to slow down and drift into the soundscape.

amazing how you created this winterly landscape with your playing and the painting! How do you learn so quickly from memory? I also love how you created movement when showing the painting and the picture. That reinforces the idea of the steps.

I'm posting my recording of Arabesque No. 1. It's a piece I learned 50 years ago (ouch, that's hard to admit) and returned to a few weeks ago. I was surprised that it was like learning it from scratch. I feel I have the basic components down, but am working with my teacher now on perfecting voicing, texture and fluidity. You won't see a lot of that in this video LOL. I re-recorded my first video since my hands were so tight from nerves. I almost made it to the end of the piece, so you might notice a small edit.

The part I find most difficult is the ascending right hand in mm. 34-36. I was actually able to work on this with Dominic at the Tonebase Piano Camp 2 weeks ago, and I do believe that's improved.

The most beautiful section for me is when the final theme is introduced starting m. 89. The piece becomes almost polyphonic at this point and it's tricky to maintain the 2-against-3 rhythm. Hope I came close.

Thank you for the video  You must have learnt really well the first time you studied the piece, as you mention many years ago. I started my piano journey late as an adult, but encouraged by your post.

this is such a beautiful piece! Beautiful playing! I love it! Like you, I’ve learned this piece when I was young, and decided to relearn it a few years ago. And I was also astonished that I had to really relearn it. But I think, that I also approach learning now completely differently. I focus much more on understanding the music rather than just playing. I don’t know whether that is better. It definitely takes more time 🤣

Thank you. I would guess when we're "younger" we focus on the technical aspects and getting the notes right. Now that I'm older and grappling with arthritis, I try to get my interpretation of the music across and worry less about speed and missed notes. I work with my teacher on creative fingerings and may leave out notes all together if they cause too much strain, as long as I feel they don't impact the intent of the piece.
