Baroque Performance Practice feat. Vijay Gupta and Bach's Chaconne

To understand the music of Bach, we must also examine his many eclectic styles with a focus today on his writing for the violin. Join MacArthur Genius Grant recipient, Vijay Gupta, as he discusses and performs one of Bach's greatest achievements: the Chaconne in D minor in its original form for solo violin.

Martin , I'm excited about the upcoming challenge!

Did have a question on whether the way that Bach's Chaconne is played has changed over the years given that the violin as an instrument has remained relatively unchanged since Bach originally wrote the piece.  I think this would be helpful to pianists playing Bach as keyboard instruments have changed tremendously since Bach's time.

What a delightful lesson! Vijay's expression of the spiritual nature and demands of this piece was wonderful! Vijay highlighted the expansiveness of the piece in a way that informs the piano, guitar and other instruments. I appreciate and admire his enthusiasm and expertise. Thank you, Vijay! Thank you, Dominic! And thank you to all those who were able to attend and ask questions during the LiveStream!

Vijay..."dedicated to creating spaces of wholeness through music." Heartwarming and powerful given your actions for those that many in our society forget about - on the streets, in prisons. And for others, too, who visit the concert halls and other places to hear you perform wondrous music! Thank you!

Lastly, and maybe most profoundly, Vijay shows deep humility and gratitude for his musical gifts...for being able to perform...to be a musician. And expressed his gratitude for being able to do so...that it is an honor that he is quite conscious of. Remarkable and wonderful!

In his TED talk, Vijay quotes Robert Schumann: "To send light into the darkness of men's hearts such is the duty of the artist."
