Jackie's Practice diary

I am practicing Mozart D minor concerto, Bach Toccata in E minor BWV 914, Chopin B flat minor scherzo and Alkan Aesop's Feast at the moment. All of these pieces are at the early stages of learning at the moment, and I am so very excited to share my progress and my frustrations with you guys. Thank you Dominic and Tonebase for providing this wonderful new resource!!!!!

This is learning and trying to memorise and push tempo the first section of the recap. The music is in the file below. I don't find Mozart hard to learn or memorise, so at this stage, the practice is quite productive. If anyone has any suggestions re technique/balance/phrasing/articulation, etc, I would greatly welcome knowing your thoughts. I haven't really given much thought to that yet, but, watching this, I did not like my approach to the LH when it was accompanying.

Started learning 2nd theme of the B flat minor scherzo. First day was mainly figuring out how to play the left hand. 2nd day starting to sound like music, but very wild. Tomorrow I will try to get it more under control and think more about phrasing, votives that I want to bring out, etc.

Thank you Monika Tusnady and Tammy ! I am super lucky to have recently started zoom lessons with a teacher who makes progress easy by teaching in a very kinaesthetic way, with a strong focus on hand structure and awareness of the muscles of the hands/arms. I sent him the first video and he told me to orient the hand more towards the thumb with straighter fingers for now. I tried it and then it just changed. Working with Alan feels like magic - finally getting the answers I have sought for decades...

Jackie what a teacher! To see, understand, and know how to advise from a distance! You are a fortunate lady, Jackie!

Here’s another Mozart concerto update. In this video I am practicing the exposition of the first movement.

I was pleased to have made some sudden progress with two short gestures in the Scherzo today… Took me by surprise, really.

I love seeing your practice methodology!  Very cool to feel like I am in the room with you.  Are you planning to do the concerto with an orchestra once Covid is over?

Hi Jacki! I have listened to your Chopin Scherzo 2 - absolutely great. Are you a professional Pianist?
I started with this Scherzo 4 weeks ago and would like to know some fingerings. Bar 554 the right hand and bar 564 the left hand. I don’t like to have the same finger on a fast repetition.
    Thanks. LG Kerstin 🇩🇪

Kerstin thank you so much! I am a teacher. I decided to challenge myself to really upgrade my piano skills and have been working with an amazing teacher for several months now. He has really taught me a whole new approach to technique. Re those two figures, I play 12432 in the rh as suggested, and I repeated the finger in the left. I think it all comes down to practice strategies. If you like, we can meet on zoom and I can tell you some of the strategies that worked for me in this piece.

Jackie Thanks for your answer. I will try. Next 2 weeks I am working a lot, but after the 29.8. I have time. Maybe we can meet. Anyway I will use the diary to challenge my self a little bit. My teacher want to hear the Scherzo on 26.8. - isn’t possible at all. 😅 But it’s still time to working on it. So have a nice weekend. Time difference to Australia is 10 hours I think. It’s crazy. LG Kerstin 🇩🇪
