Augustín Barrios Mangoré’s La Catedral

Hi all,

I’m listening to Manuel Matarrita’s album, Confidencias, and am asking whether anyone can point me to a reliable edition of his transcription by Carlos Payés that I can purchase. My Google searches have been in vain to date.

I played classical guitar for most of my adult life and would love to play this on the piano also. It is a special piece in the classical guitar repertoire and the piece’s backstory is interesting…perhaps apocryphal…but enough to prompt me to ask for help here. For those of you who enjoy Nazareth and Villa Lobos, listen to Barrios. Opportunities for your piano transcriptions of his works abound!

  • Colin  What I am hearing and seeing is this. The pianist is just playing the guitar score ONE octave down. But all the same notes as this score. Follow along and you will see what I mean. Every once in while, the pianist adds some extra bass notes that double the above music. But you can read this guitar score directly onto the piano and start sounding similar to the recording!
