    READY-SET-GOLDBERG!

No hair, no makeup, but three variations is various states of readiness and forgetfulness. I'm starting to feel the possibilities not just in my head but in my fingers, too. Well, a little.

Monika Tusnady Very impressive.  Variation #1 is really tricky and you play it well at a quick tempo.  I'm inspired to continue working on these!

Brett Gilbert @marianne Thank you. Bach does not give much intuitive interpretive space, does he? With a lot of practice hands separately, I refingered Variation 1 and hope that this, and a bit of thinking 馃, will carve a path to originality. After all, Bach on the piano in the 21st century is really a transcription and can benefit fro, taking the intervening centuries into account.

    • Monika Tusnady Fantastic, Monika!! 馃憦馃徎 I am super-impressed with this, love your playing!! You are on a true path to originality, and seems to me that you are "in the flow!"..馃槄 Yes, Bach on the modern piano is something different than the harpsichord, and we should take advantage of that.

Sindre Skarelven it鈥檚 really nice not to have a deadline, isn鈥檛 it? This way, we can putter at our leisure, try this and that, and fail a thousand times. What a luxury!

    • Monika Tusnady Yes, that's true! I think I need a little scheduling to keep momentum, but it's nice to not have a deadline for this project. I've started on the Aria and var. 1, those are my main goals for november :)

    • Monika Tusnady yay Monika! Sounding great, and already memorized! Fantastic. I am working on the Goldberg as well, it is so enjoyable! Brahms in the morning and Bach at night. My cup runneth over.

    • Sindre Skarelven we are in the same boat! I need the deadline to force me to put it in my schedule/calendar. As well, like you I am working on the Aria and Var. 1 right now.

Monika Tusnady Superb, Monika! I didn't visit the Goldberg forum in a few days and now I find your video. Wow! It sounds with the perfect Bach style. Of course, you are "in the flow" (as Sindre said) with your Bach.

Monika Tusnady Nice! 馃憦 I like the way your digital piano sounds. Quite natural. I don't recognize it. Can you tell me the brand and model? Thanks.

Charlie Gesualdo glad you like it! It鈥檚 a DEXIBELL,  VIVO H5, made in Italy. It has a wonderful and constantly updated sound bank and well as totally natural action., which can be adjusted somewhat. I couldn鈥檛 be happier with it! A huge advantage of a digital instrument is being able to play it with headphones, or even with no sound at all, except in your imagination.

Monika Tusnady thanks for your quick reply! I have the Kawai es920. Pretty good action for a portable, but not thrilled with the sounds. I think I need to use it more in my imagination... :-) cheers...

I've started working on the Goldberg variations.  The aria is in decent shape, but I don't want to post a video of it.  Been checking out some of the other variations.  Started a bit with variation 7 since it's considered one of the easier ones.  Variation 3 sounds fun, but think it will take me more time to work on.  Then I started on variation 1.  Wow!  Just the RH part alone is a wonderful composition of Bach's.  And although I've listened to others play it, I found the experience total different when playing it for myself.  I can only describe it as the piano playing equivalent of feeling like you're flying and that sense of freedom and of possibilities.  Bach truly left us with so many gifts with his music.

    • Anthony Miyake I worked on this for about a year, going through all the variations, memorizing some. It is a combination of fun and discouraging. But I feel in a lot of ways it's easier than the WTC.

Harriet Kaplan , yes, it helps that they are all in the same key!  But I believe the Goldberg variations is considered a single piece, so as a whole (or even in sizable groups) would be more difficult than a single set of preludes & fugues from the WTC.

By the way, great job with the Beethoven Sonata at Dominic's Masterclass.  Unfortunately I had a work meeting so had to duck out of the live stream after Jack played, but I watched it later on the recording.  I became familiar with that Sonata only after I read that Schubert based the opening of the impromptu I'm learning for the Schubert challenge on it (which is also in the key of Ab major).

  • Here my favorite variation no 25. I think it鈥檚 the most vulnerable piece of music ever written, and it鈥榮 just how I feel these days.

Andrea Buckland , well played, and to me communicates the pathos of the music.  Think we're all feeling a bit uneasy these days with the events in the news.  But in the words of Andras Schiff, we are privileged to have music.  Otherwise, what would we have?

    • Anthony Miyake Thank you, Anthony! Yes, exactly! To me playing music - especially Bach -  is the best meditation for peace, for ourselves and for others.

Thanks to the "Bach in March" challenge, here I share with you my first Goldberg video (Aria, 1, 2, 4, 5, 13, 18, 19 and 30 variations). Since this is a very, very, long-term challenge, how can it be otherwise..., I will add new variations in a next video, when is another matter...
