Learning Music Well
Dear Pianists,
Happy Sunday Morning from Hilda here!
In today's livestream, I'm going to talk about how to learn music confidently, deeply, and quickly. If you get frustrated with constantly losing your place from having to look at the music, then back at your hands at the keys, and then back to the music; or if you have trouble memorizing music, this will be a livestream for you! I will discuss musical, physical and visual patterns, as well as how to identify musical elements such as harmony, rhythm, and counterpoint as you learn music.
I believe it may be rewarding for you to be near a piano when we do our livestream today. We'll talk about the Theme of the Schubert Impromptu Op. 142 No. 3 as well as excerpts from the exposition of the Schubert B-flat Major Sonata. I'll ask for your input in the chat, and for your real-time comments, questions, and ideas.
Schubert Discovery Month Week 3's discussion question was: how do you build Schubert's music into your life? We'll be discussing and answering this question today.

I'm glad I managed to watch the rescheduled session live today. It certainly has me thinking more about the pulse of my Schubert Impromptu (90.4) which I didn't think much about before when I first started playing it.
I hope I didn't ruin it with the comment about the truck horns in Ottawa. It really has been a nuisance for a month for the residents and businesses of this capital. Here is the story about its effect on pianist Angela Hewitt:

Thanks for the session yesterday, Hilda. I think it's helpful to annotate our scores in a way that makes learning them easier and gives us a deeper understanding of what we're playing. I started looking through the notes my piano teacher used to write for me on the scores. Sometimes she would write the beat, but sometimes it was just to help boost my confidence. I came across this note, "Be sure!", as she wanted me to play with greater confidence and it helped.

Thank you for this Livestream, Hilda! I enjoy your analogies, such as how music is like verbal conversation...we repeat what we think is important. And the woodcutting analogy. Very interesting.
It is so enjoyable to learn from people who love the music they are studying/teaching/playing.
