Tonebase Nocturne Nook

This thread is dedicated to Nocturnes. This includes the Nocturnes of Chopin, Field, Fauré, Poulenc etc. Additionally, music that is not specifically a nocturne but has a strong association with the night is also welcome!

This thread is modelled on the successful "Tonebase Bach Stage" thread and is similarly intended for everyone that wants to join and share their love of Nocturnes and the night.

    I am currently working on the Op. 15 Nocturnes of Chopin and have recorded a recent play-through of the Nocturne in F Major.

    Beautiful playing as always, Dustin!

    Here is my contribution, the 2nd mvt from Rachmaninoff's Sonata no.2. I have always associated that piece with the dark Siberian winter night, and solitude.

    This was recorded last year, on a magnificent Mason & Hamlin BB. I added some imagery that goes well with my extra-musical interpretation of the piece. If you prefer to see me play it, you can find the video of me performing the entire sonata on my Youtube channel. But this video here looks better IMO😄.

     Is the Nocturne Nook only for our performances, or can we post links to others' interpretations of pieces we have not played, as well?

    Also, someone should start a Sonata Stage!

       Hi Maria! The intention is more for performances from the Tonebase community so that people have a place to share their work / progress on all things Nocturnes!

      I believe that  had mentioned that she may start one for sonatas. If I had a recording of recent sonata work I would start it off. Do you have a sonata movement to share? You could always start it! I don't necessarily want to assume control of multiple threads if others are eager to take the lead on one!

       I just love the idea of the ‘Nocturne Nook.’ Fantastic! I’ll definitely be contributing here.

      I thought I would start the Classical Sonata one at the end of the upcoming challenge starting on August 31st with Jared Dunn. Lots of people could possibly also have videos to contribute at that point.

      I’ve always thought that Music connected to water would be a good topic as well, all kinds of pieces from all kinds of eras. I’ll see how the sonata one goes first - unless anyone else is interested???

      That is funny you mentioned music connected to water because I also considered starting a water themed thread! It was a theme at a faculty concert years ago at a conservatory I was a part of at the time and I believe I played a few Barcarolles and Debussy's Ondine prelude. So I agree, it would be a great topic =)

       It’s funny that you mention barcarolles because Bill McGlaughlin, the host of the radio program “Exploring Music,” recently departed, sadly, did a whole series on “arias and barcarolles” because of this remark made by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to Leonard Bernstein, “I like music with a theme, not all them arias and barcarolles.”

      A barcarolle is a Venetian boat song.
