Week 4 — Share Your Playing 🎶

We’ve reached the final part of the challenge.

You’ve chosen your piece, worked through the details, explored character and imagination — now it’s time to share where you are.

This week is about capturing your playing and putting it out there!

On April 3rd, we’ll host a live Watch Party, featuring submissions from across the community. This is a chance to hear each other, reflect on the process, and celebrate the work that’s gone into these past weeks.

Your Focus for the Week until April 3rd.

Record and submit your piece (or an excerpt).

That’s it.

No need for multiple takes, no pressure to polish everything. A single honest run-through is more than enough.

A few suggestions:

  • Record a full take, even if it’s not perfect
  • Let the character and musical idea lead!
  • Keep going, even through small slips
  • Think of it as sharing, not performing

How to Participate

  • Upload your video directly in the forum
  • Or share a link (YouTube, Google Drive, etc.)
  • Include the piece and anything you discovered while working on it

Whether this is your first time sharing or something you do often, this moment matters. It’s where the work becomes something real.

Looking forward to hearing what you’ve been building.

I've been all over the place in regard to this challenge. Initially, I was going to play the 2nd movement of the D minor concerto or something short like the K. 280 Adagio. Then I didn't think I'd be able to actually take part in the final weeks due to some travel commitments. But then I listened to everyone's work and thought I should at least do something.

Anyway, for the last few days I have been replaying the Adagio from the C Minor Sonata (K. 457) which I first learned several years ago. I forgot how charming it is to play. I will be travelling tomorrow so I won't be able to listen to the watch party unfortunately but I enjoyed this challenge and listening to everyone's submissions!

My recording is an excerpt as I had a delivery interrupt my return to the A section!

Thank you! Yes, I am quite pleased with my piano. It is a C2X which I’ve had for almost a year now. My students love it too! It has a lovely range of tone and dynamic. How do you like your Yamaha piano?

My bluetooth pedal is an airturn duo 500. It is actually just next to the una corda but it just out of sight on the video. I haven’t had it long and am still getting used to it. It can definitely be disruptive if not in a good spot. I don’t have a trick but I do try to place it as close to the left of the una corda as possible without it feeling in the way (which is a bit of trial and error).
      Thanks again for listening =)

Unfortunately, I don't know if I can submit a recording for the Mozart Challenge. I will if I can.

Hi everyone. I hadn't planned to submit anything, but I needed to have something fun to work on over the past little bit. It's been a rough few weeks (my father passed in February, and then my father-in-law just passed this week), and I needed some bright and cheerful moments in my days. Only the a section is even remotely ready, and there are still hesitations I haven't quite yet ironed out, but here is about 30 seconds of the Allegro (some say Allegretto) in F which I have been working on:

so sorry for your losses. I also find the music of Mozart helpful in difficult times.

I am sorry for your loss. Music helps for sure. I do fondly remember a tribute recital in honor of one of my past piano teachers who had passed away. But even just playing music helps a lot.

Take care! It’s so good we have music to touch and heal all those deep levels of our sadness and hope.

It sure is the time for last minute additions! I'm probably too late, but just in case:

Dear Noel, you play beautifully. Your fingers move so fast, I have great respect for that. Thank you so much for sharing, your recording was a real pleasure. What exactly is standing on your grand piano? And what is displayed on the screen? You played from memory, right? Warmest regards from Germany, Claudia

Thank you so much for listening, and for your encouraging words!

Re: fast fingers. I have to say that the light action of my piano (Baldwin SD-10 with a German action!) really helps. But fast Mozart is always difficult. It requires another kind of virtuosity than the late romantic repertoire that I usually play. Using the best fingerings that one could find is essential.

Re: my screen. That's for my recording software! I use Studio One. And yes I do play from memory. The software shows the sound wave that I produce with my playing. I find it soothing to watch when I play!

How I enjoyed your performance, dear Noel!👏😃 I really admired your technique and your clarity of execution 👍. You demonstrate great confidence in setting and balance and your colors are vivid and narrative. The ornaments are also very fluid and precise…bravo 🥰🥰

Thank you so much for your encouraging words! Now my haters will hate me even more. Joking🤣. Truth be told, to me, my performances always feel like disastrously cursory approximations😅. That is why I like to practice exaggerating every detail, knowing that half will be lost in performance. But that is the nature of this art and I just have to accept that nobody will hear the best of me, unless they live with me😆.

I didn’t submit a video as, once again, I had to realize that I am a slow learner. These 4 week challenges are too short for me in order to submit a somehow satisfying video 😪. I think I can only participate in these challenges with pieces that I have already learned in the past and that need some polish to bring them back to performance level. I am very impressed with the progress of the other participants! Great work 👏👏👏! I look forward to the event today! Best regards and happy Easter from a slow learner 😂🎹😂

I don't think it makes you a slow learner! I was busy with other pieces this past month, so I don't think I can submit anything, and if I do it would be full of mistakes!

Congratulations to all those who have submitted recordings. Alas, mine will be late as usual but I am determined to do it! Enjoy the Concert watch party later- I will have to catch up with that as well. Usual busy end of term stuff and family things, nothing to complain about really but sometimes I just can’t get everything done!

Rough take after 1 month.  Many thanks to the TB NYC IRL Team (Noah & Dominic & Ben), Jarred and my dearest Mozart buddies Sindre & Natalie) for getting me to finally start this lovely Sonata.  It's been on my bucket list forever!
