I love you are giving a chance to analyze the music of Mexican composers like Ponce. I love his intermezzo no 1. It’s a short charming and expressive piece.

  • Hi Dominic - I'm looking forward to Fri, and here are a few areas I hope you can comment on:

    a) tempo - there seems to be 2 approaches to this that I can discern from youtube - the brisk/passionate/declamatory/bravura style; and to a lesser extent a slower/calmer/tender one - Is one more authentic than the other? It's also often been said that the tempo should be at a pace that a singer can cope with - does this then favour the 1st?

    b) articulation - there are different accent marks used in the same bar eg ^, >, and also indications of 'rinsfz', and 'fp'. How different should they sound in the piece?

    - LH chord rolls.  Through all my years of playing I thought the rule was to sound the top note on the beat - which I have with this piece. But recently I was told to roll from the bottom note on the beat for another piece. Are there any hard and fast rules over this?

    c) Why are LIszt transcriptions seldom performed in main concert programmes - are they considered less worthy? I have his Rigoletto Paraphrase and Falla's piano transcription of Spanish Dance no 1 in my exam programme - I hope not to be penalised...

    Thank you so much!

By the way, I really enjoyed your lesson on finding the inner voices of Brahms Op 118 - so so enlightening!

I really enjoy your master class. Widmung is my favorite piece in all time. Do you have any tips how to start working on this piece. Should I start the difficult section frist? I have been wanting to working on this piece but never gets to the end.

    •  LilyLiPianoStudio Hello! I suggest starting from the beginning especially to establish a clear vocal line. The hardest part is then trying to maintain this singing line throughout! The good news is that the chords and arpeggios are not too bad once you figure out the ‘pattern’. But the biggest challenges may be coping with the big chord rolls and keeping the momentum.  Just lots of practice needed to fix that. Good luck! It’s taken me more than a year but it was all worth it!

Ching Lee Goh Thansks for your suggestions. Yes, practice make everything works. I think the tempo I chose was too fast. I like the tempo Dominic suggested. I will try to slow down the tempo.
